SHAKY GUNNERS COULD BE EXPOSED

Arsenal and Chelsea get a quick opportunity on Tuesday to put weekend Premier League defeats behind them with Champions League challengers at Partizan Belgrade and home to Marseille respectively.
There is no doubt that the reverse suffered by the Gunners on Saturday against West Brom at the Emirates was the more traumatic.

"I did not recognise my team. We were not up for it quality wise or concentration wise," was Arsene Wenger's admission after the 3-2 scoreline - they had trailed 3-0 at one stage.

Some comical defending and Manuel Almunia looking like a Sunday League 'keeper on more than one occasion as it again looks like Wenger's insistence on not splashing out on a top-class custodian could hinder their quest for silverware.

A late rally inspired by Samir Nasri did garner some praise from the manager as his side did play right to the final whistle and it will be fascinating to see how his young side respond to not only the defeat but the manner in which it took place.

A European trip could be the ideal tonic after their 6-0 destruction of Braga earlier in the month when they looked untouchable at times.

Partizan failed to win a home game last time they were in the Champions League in 2003/04 and they made a low-key start this year with a 1-0 loss at Shakhtar Donetsk earlier in the month.

But they lead the way once again domestically, their first dropped points of the season coming at the weekend in 0-0 draw with Spartak Zlatibor - one eye on the visit of the Gunners may well have been a factor.

Arsenal have lost their last three away fixtures in Europe and won just two of their last 10 - so their could be some merit in siding with the home side to spring an 9/2 surprise considering they have conceded just one goal so far this season in the Serbian capital.

Chelsea's perfect start to the Premier League season was halted by Manchester City where they for once found themselves outmuscled in the middle of the park before beng caught on the counter by Carlos Tevez.
Marseille boss Didier Deschamp has fond memories of his time at Stamford Bridge and a 2-1 win over Sochaux at the weekend was a timely tonic for them in Ligue 1 after a less-than-convincing start to the campaign.

They unfortunately face a team that is staring three consecutive defeats in the face after last week's Carling Cup exit to Newcastle and I doubt whether Carlos Ancelotti is keen on allowing that particular stat. They should land the lengthy odds-on prices being quoted by the layer. Chelsea to win 4/11

It was never in doubt that American Corey Pavin would give Tiger Woods one of his captain’s picks but surprisingly the ‘bulldog’ also selected 21-year-old Rickie Fowler, who has yet to win a PGA Tour event. Pavin should be more concerned about Woods though, who is currently remodelling his swing and yet to win on the PGA Tour this season. It remains to be seen whether the controversy surrounding the world’s number one golfer will have a negative impact on the USA Ryder Cup team.

The captain also handed wildcard spots to the experienced duo of Zach Johnson and Stewart Cink. Pavin’s picks join eight players who earned an automatic place in the 2010 Ryder Cup team at the end of the PGA Championship. They are Phil Mickelson, Steve Stricker, Jim Furyk, Hunter Mahan, Dustin Johnson, Bubba Watson, Matt Kuchar and Jeff Overton, who is winless during his five years on the PGA Tour

Team Europe’s captain, Colin Montgomerie, has six rookies involved in the 2010 Ryder Cup – Italian brothers Francesco & Edoardo Molinari, Martin Kaymer, Peter Hanson, Ross Fisher and Rory McIlroy. They are joined by Englishmen Ian Poulter, Luke Donald and Lee Westwood, three-time major winner Padraig Harrington, U.S. Open champion Graeme McDowell and the magical Spaniard Miguel Angel Jimenez.

Premier League Betting - Weekend’s Tips

Manchester City have made a solid if unspectacular start to their new season but they could come down to earth with a bump this weekend as Chelsea are the visitors to Eastlands on Saturday lunchtime. Carlo Ancelotti’s side look as if they could beat anyone at the moment and the 11/10 on an away win looks like terrific value.

Manchester United should have been out of sight against Liverpool last time out before sneaking a win by the odd goal in five and the 2008 champions travel to Bolton on Sunday lunchtime. Whilst Owen Coyle’s side have made an encouraging start to this season, United should have enough to win at 1/2

Here’s a Midlands derby on Sunday afternoon at Molineux as Wolves take on Aston Villa. It’s a tough one to call, this, and the 9/4 on a draw might be the best option.

Sunday’s late live game features Newcastle United and Stoke City. Newcastle have had an inconsistent start with excellent wins over Everton and Aston Villa punctuated by a home defeat to Blackpool. I have no doubt that Stoke will finish in mid-table and the Potters are not bad value at 11/4 to take three points in this one.

Elsewhere, Roma play Inter Milan in an attractive fixture on Saturday night whilst Barcelona must travel to Athletic Bilbao without the injured Lionel Messi. Werder Bremen play Hamburg in the Bundesliga’s Saturday teatime live match.

Football Betting Tips - Switzerland v England - Euro 2012 Qualifiers

Subsequent revelations about Wayne Rooney’s private life has put a bit of a dampener on England’s 4-0 demolition of Bulgaria and Fabio Capello’s team will have to concentrate on the job in hand when they face Switzerland at the St Jakob-Park in Basel.

Rooney was instrumental in England’s victory at Wembley but may not get the same amount of freedom against the defensively-minded Swiss, who shocked Spain in the World Cup before falling away. 

The home side are the second seeds in the group but have only managed four goals in their last 10 games, so there may not be as much pressure on England’s makeshift back-line as anticipated, and Gerrard and company are fancied to sneak a 1-0 win (5/1) to take control of their section.

TOUGH SWISS CAN HOLD ENGLAND

If you cast your mind back to February 6 2008 you might remember that England beat Switzerland 2-1 at Wembley in Fabio Capello's first game in charge.

The Italian will be hoping for a repeat result on Tuesday night but since then Ottmar Hitzfeld has taken over the Swiss side and he has made them an incredibly hard team to beat. Their last seven results have been 0-1, 1-1, 1-0, 0-1, 0-0, 1-0 and 0-0 and that third scoreline was the famous 1-0 win over Spain at the World Cup in South Africa.

Of course, the Spaniards went on to lift the trophy so Switzerland are clearly no mugs and it is somewhat surprising to see them chalked up at 10/3 with Bet365.  England, I'm sure you all know, come into this on the back of wins over Hungary and Bulgaria at Wembley, the latter a 4-0 thumping in the first Euro 2012 qualifier on Friday.

So for England and Capello it looks like it's business as usual as far as qualifying for major tournaments are concerned.  Because for all that they were bitterly disappointing at the main event in South Africa, the process of getting there was mightily easy.

Nine wins out of 10 ensured a group win, the only loss coming in the Ukraine when they were already guaranteed qualification. When you consider that record, perhaps the shade of odds-on about the Three Lions appeals.

But it's never that simple with England and injuries to John Terry, Rio Ferdinand and Michael Dawson means they are depleted at the back.

They coped without Frank Lampard and Peter Crouch in the goal-getting department against Bulgaria thanks to Jermain Defoe's hat-trick but Wayne Rooney was superb without scoring and you do wonder how much Sunday's allegations in the papers will affect him - if indeed he even plays.

There's a huge question mark there now and I do think that all things considered England will be happy to get through this game with a point.

A draw at home against England would also be an acceptable start for Switzerland and the stalemate is a major player at an attractive 5/2 with Bet365.

However, we'll go a step further and suggest having a play on no goalscorer with Bet365 who dangle 8/1.
This looks a more-than-fair price considering England's talisman might not be fully focused on the task in hand and Switzerland are a tough team to break down in any case.

Under 2.5 goals looks a solid shout but the price on that one is a prohibitive 1.675 so we'll happily chance there being no goals at all given the circumstances.
