Andy Murray defeated Roger Federer in straight sets to reach the final of the Shanghai Masters, where he will face Novak Djokovic.

Andy Murray sets up Djokovic final

The British number one came through 6-4 6-4 in a rain-affected contest to extend his head-to-head record against Federer to 10-8.

Murray was aggressive from the start, breaking Federer’s serve in the first game of the match. The Swiss recovered and seemed to be getting into his rhythm but inexplicably served three double faults in a row to hand Murray another break.

The Scot accepted the gift and didn’t let up as he took the first set. There was a short delay as rain stopped play, Murray unhappy as Federer protested about the conditions. The players came back on to the court after a six-minute break which seemed to affect Murray more than his opponent.

However, the British number one regained his composure and broke in the fifth game of the second set with a brilliant forehand winner. With Murray about to serve for the match, the rain once more came down and the players were forced to wait while the roof was closed.

Once again, after a half-hour delay, Murray held his nerve and served out the match to seal an impressive win. He will take on Djokovic on Sunday for the title after the Serbian produced a dominant display to see off Tomas Berdych in straight sets in his semi-final.

Murray is 11/8 to defeat Djokovic, who can be backed at 4/7. A straight sets victory for the Scot is at 11/4.
