Dawn Approach looks set to run in the St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot later this month despite finishing last in The Derby.

The horse won the 2000 Guineas earlier this year and also enjoyed success in the Coventry Stakes, Vincent O’Brien Stakes and Dewhurst Stakes in 2012, but fared extremely badly at Epsom less than a fortnight ago.

However, trainer Jim Bolger is happy to enter Dawn Approach into the Royal Ascot race, subject to a gallop on Thursday.

He said: “He’s been left in the St James’s Palace Stakes and, subject to a satisfactory piece of work on Thursday, he is an intended runner.”

Godolphin’s racing manager Simon Crisford said: “Jim is very happy with how Dawn Approach has done since the Derby and he is keen to let him run at Royal Ascot if everything continues to go well with his preparation between now and the race on Tuesday.

“We had a discussion this morning and decided to let him run if he pleases in his work on Thursday.

“Jim has been delighted with how relaxed Dawn Approach has been in his training.”

Animal Kingdom is 8/11 to win the Queen Anne Stakes at Ascot, with Elusive Kate 10/1.

Nigel Twiston-Davies’ horse made the final field of 40 after Quinz scoped badly on Wednesday.

Unfortunately Quinz cannot run in the National due to a moderate scope.

Twiston-Davies confirmed: “It’s great he’s got in the race. He’s a stayer, he jumps well and he’ll run really well. Tom Scudamore rides.”

Quinz had been one of the outsiders for Saturday’s big race at Aintree. The nine-year-old returned to action for the first time since December 2011 in February’s Racing Plus Chase and finished a promising fourth behind Opening Batsman.

However, trainer Philip Hobbs tweeted: “Unfortunately Quinz cannot run in the National due to a moderate scope.”

Meanwhile, Venetia Williams has revealed that the 2009 Grand National winner Mon Mome has retired.

The 13-year-old, who won the race by 12 lengths despite starting off as one of the rank outsiders at 100-1, went on to finish third in the 2010 Cheltenham Gold Cup behind Imperial Commander and Denman.

“I bought him as a three-year-old and he gave us all the best day of our racing lives at Aintree,” said Williams. “He was one of the most impressive National winners in the last 20 years, I would have thought.”

On His Own is 7/1 to win Saturday’s Grand National, while Seabass can be backed at 9/1, Cappa Bleu at 11/1 and Colbert Station at 11/1.

Wonderhorse Frankel will have five rivals when he makes what is expected to be his final appearance in the Qipco Champion Stakes at Ascot on Saturday.

Sir Henry Cecil’s four-year-old has won 13 races out of 13 to date and is 2/11 to make it 14 consecutive victories at the weekend.

I don’t know how Frankel will go on it, but I know my horse will love it.

However, he is sure to face stiff competition from the other five declared runners – Cirrus Des Aigles, Nathaniel, Bullet Train, Master of Hounds and Pastorius.

The ground at Ascot is currently on the soft side and further rain could make the conditions more conducive to a possible shock.

2011 winner Cirrus Des Aigles is 4/1 to be the horse to end Frankel’s dream run and trainer Corine Barande-Barbe believes that her charge can make the most of the soft ground.

She said earlier this week: “I will not be surprised if he wins. I will be one of the few who will be very happy.

“When he won last year’s race there were seven Group One winners in it. We had horses like So You Think, Nathaniel and Snow Fairy behind us.

“I hear the ground is going to be very soft. I don’t know how Frankel will go on it, but I know my horse will love it.”

Meanwhile, Nathaniel is 10/1 to win the race, with Master of Hounds 100/1 and Pastorius 33/1.
