Mullins hopes to match 2005 Grand National triumph

Willie Mullins has high hopes of a second Grand National win for his stable, with On His Own the pick of the Irishman’s three runners in the Aintree showpiece.

Mullins hopes to match 2005 Grand National triumph

On His Own, 9/1 to win the race, will benefit from having two-time National winner Ruby Walsh on board on Saturday, with Mullins, 5/1 to provide the winning horse, also confident in the chances of Quel Esprit, 33/1, and Quiscover Fontaine, 50/1.

The drying ground will be fine for all of them.

Willie Mullins

Mullins, who trained 2005 winner Hedgehunter, said of On His Own: “He seems to have arrived at the track in good order and I don’t think the drying ground will be any harm to him.”

Going on to rate the chances of his other two charges, Mullins added: “Quel Esprit is a Grade One winner and I think he’ll handle the trip. He’d probably prefer softer ground, but the trip should bring his stamina into play.

“(Quiscover Fontaine) should have no trouble with the trip. The drying ground will be fine for all of them.”

Meanwhile, Donald McCain believes that 2011 winner Ballabriggs, 20/1 to win the 2013 Grand National, could make it two victories in three years at Aintree.

“Ballabriggs is in good nick and I’m very happy with him going into the race,” McCain said. “He’s a 12-year-old, but he has low mileage on the clock.

“The ground has come right for him this weekend and as long as we get a bit of luck in the running, you’d have to be very hopeful.”

Harbour Watch out of Ascot date

Brilliant Richard Hannon two-year-old Harbour Watch is having no luck as he tries to hit the comeback trail – the latest setback being that he looks certain to miss Royal Ascot.

It makes more sense to skip Ascot and bring him back into action for the Criterion in which he gets no penalty.

Richard Hannon

The yard now has him pencilled in to make his long delayed return to action at Newmarket on 30th June in the Group Three John Sunley Criterion Stakes.

Hannon didn’t bother confirming him as a runner when the six-day declaration stage came around for the St James’s Palace Stakes on Tuesday and took the view there is little point in running him on Wednesday in the Jersey as he would have 5lbs more to carry.

In Harbour Watch’s absence Power is 5/2 to win the St James’s Palace Stakes, with Born To Sea 9/1 and Lucayan 9/1.

Hannon said: “He did a nice piece of work under Kieran O’Neill and is moving like his old self, but it would have been too much bringing him back into Group 1 and why run him with a penalty in the Jersey.

“It makes more sense to skip Ascot and bring him back into action for the Criterion in which he gets no penalty. The July course will suit him well and that looks like the perfect comeback.

“That should set him up for the Sussex Stakes at Glorious Goodwood where he is of course likely to meet a certain horse called Frankel.”

McCoy cautious over Synchronised hopes

McCoy cautious over Synchronised hopes

AP McCoy may be aboard the class horse of the Grand National, but he’s taking nothing for granted in the race where absolutely anything can happen.

Synchronised obviously benefited from an off day from Long Run at Cheltenham, but took the best possible advantage to run out a very impressive winner of the Gold Cup.

I’m confident of a good ride, but this race isn’t like any other.

AP McCoy

He strode away to glory up the testing hill to show that there will be few stamina doubts surrounding him when the National gets underway on Saturday afternoon.

Synchronised is 7/1 to win the National, with West End Rocker 10/1 and last year’s winner Ballabriggs 12/1.

McCoy, however, has seen it all before and suggests that success in a huge Cheltenham event may not necessarily mean ready made success around Aintree.

He said: “He proved himself a very tough horse and did brilliantly, but he has a lot of weight in the National, although he stays well and the rain has come in time to soften it up a bit for him.

“Yes, I’m confident of a good ride, but this race isn’t like any other and I’ve seen good jumpers – such as Synchronised – fail to perform up there whereas lower quality horses sometimes go very well.

“He’s surprised us in the past though and we’ll have to wait and see what else he may have up his sleeve so to speak.”

Gold Cup a classic showdown

Gold Cup a classic showdown

Kauto Star and Long Run go head-to-head for the fifth time in their careers in Friday’s Cheltenham Gold Cup, with the horses tied at two wins apiece to date.

Long Run won the re-arranged King George VI Chase and the Gold Cup in 2011 to assert dominance in the rivalry, only for Kauto Star to hit back later in the year to triumph in Haydock’s Betfair Chase and the King George VI Chase on Boxing Day.

The score is 2-2 and this is the decider, so let’s hope it’s a great race.

Nicky Henderson

That leaves the pair facing up to each other for a fifth time on Friday, with Kauto Star 7/2 to win the race after overcoming an injury concern, while Long Run is 7/4 to take the honours.

Long Run’s trainer Nicky Henderson said: “The score is 2-2 and this is the decider, so let’s hope it’s a great race.

“We’re happy where we are and Paul Nicholls is happy where he is and I’d have been genuinely sad if Kauto Star came there and wasn’t at his best.

“Kauto Star thumped us two times, so we’ve got to get back and beat him.”

Meanwhile, Paul Nicholls has full faith in his charge Kauto Star to come out on top in the latest round of the rivalry, adding: “Kauto has astounded us this year and he now seems in really good form.

“It’s a different track at Cheltenham, but if he runs to the form of Kempton and Haydock then he has a massive chance.”

Burton Port (11/4) heads the market to win the race should the big two falter.
