Donald confident of breaking duck

Luke Donald has admitted that it is “very sweet” to return to number one in the world after retaining the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth.

Donald’s sixth victory in the last 15 months saw him leapfrog Rory McIlroy, who failed to make the cut at the European Tour’s flagship event, at the top of the rankings.

Donald held off Justin Rose’s challenge and eventually won by four strokes to pick up the first prize of almost £600,000, finishing with a 15-under-par total of 273.

These victories are key to bringing that confidence into the Majors.

Last year Donald secured the title by beating Lee Westwood in a play-off, a success that lifted him to the top of the rankings, where he remained until March.

Donald will now turn his attention to this week’s Memorial tournament in Ohio, before trying his luck at the US Open in San Francisco between 14th and 17th June.

He is 12/1 to win his first Major next month, while Tiger Woods can be backed at 12/1 to win the US Open and McIlroy is 9/1 to retain the title he secured 12 months ago.

Donald said after his latest success: “To come and defend and get back to number one is very sweet indeed. I was just trying to keep my head down and plug away. I was swinging well and I’ve putted well all week.”

Asked what was next on his wish-list he said: “Obviously win Majors. I feel I am getting closer. Every time I win it adds to my confidence. These victories are key to bringing that confidence into the Majors.”
