Germany the favourites for Prandelli

Cesare Prandelli accepts that Germany will be favourites for their Euro 2012 semi-final against Italy in Warsaw on Thursday evening.

Gianluigi Buffon made a crucial shootout save for Italy in Kiev.

The Azzurri needed penalties to defeat England in the quarter-finals after the game ended goalless after extra-time in Kiev, with Italy now 15/8 to see off the Germans to reach the final.

Meanwhile, Joachim Low’s side are 2/5 to send Italy home, with Prandelli admitting that Germany are the fancied team.

He told the Italian media: “Are Germany favourites for the semi-final? Absolutely yes. Germany and Spain are favourites here.

“We are delighted, but we have to get ready for Germany now.

“They have had two more days’ rest, but if we have the same approach, the same desire, I think we can compete. We’ll need everyone fit and fresh; we’re going to go for it.

“They’re always attacking games against Germany. Germany are a great side – they made changes against Greece and it made no difference.”

Italy’s progress came at the expense of a booking for sub Christian Maggio, who is now ruled out of the Germany showdown, but Claudio Marchisio should recover from severe cramp which prevented him from taking a penalty.
