Phillips Idowu expected to compete

It is looking increasingly likely that triple jumper Phillips Idowu will be fit enough to to compete in the Triple Jump.

The 33-year-old, who won the silver medal at Beijing four years ago and is 8/1to win gold this time, has endured a difficult build-up to the Olympics.

We expect him to compete.

Idowu failed to attend a pre-Games training camp in Portugal which prompted the British Olympic Association to request his medical records after he said he was struggling with a nerve problem in his hip and back.

Idowu reportedly picked up his latest injury in the build-up to the Aviva Grand Prix at Crystal Palace earlier this month, an event which he withdrew from just 25 minutes before it was scheduled to start.

However, the BOA’s chef de mission Andy Hunt insists Idowu is making good progress from his injury, saying: “We expect him to compete.”

If passed fit, Idowu is set to begin competition on 7th August. Some of his main competitors are expected to be Christian Taylor (6/5), Will Claye (4/1) and Daniele Greco (20/1).
