Spurs win race for Sigurdsson

Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed the signing of Hoffenheim midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson, who impressed while on loan at Swansea City last season.

The 22-year-old Iceland international, who previously played in England with Reading, scored seven goals in 18 Premier League appearances for the Swans, but a permanent move floundered after boss Brendan Rodgers left to join Liverpool.

He’s a very good manager and I’m sure he’ll be a success.

The Reds then became the favourites to land Sigurdsson, before Spurs stepped in to seal a deal, which is the first completed since Andre Villas-Boas took charge at White Hart Lane.

Sigurdsson spent two seasons with Hoffenheim, scoring nine goals from 26 Bundesliga appearances, but fell out of favour last term and opted to head to Swansea to gain first-team football.

Meanwhile, Chelsea boss Roberto Di Matteo is backing his ex-Blues colleague Villas-Boas to be a success with Spurs, saying: “He’s a very good manager and I’m sure he’ll be a success.

“It doesn’t surprise me that he’s back. I think it’s a good choice.”

Spurs are 15/8 to finish in the Premier League top four next season and are 25/1 to win the title.
