Defoe exit talk quashed

Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas has played down reports suggesting Jermain Defoe is keen to leave White Hart Lane and sign for MLS side Toronto FC.

Defoe exit talk quashed

The Canadian side are managed by the former Blackburn Rovers stalwart Ryan Nelsen, who also enjoyed a brief stint at Spurs at the end of his playing career.

The former New Zealand international has declared his interest in signing the striker, who has 18 months left to run on his current deal, but has hardly played in the Premier League this season.

The 31-year-old has been used in Spurs’ Capital One Cup and Europa League games and Villas-Boas insists he still has a crucial role to play at the club.

We want the player to stay on and hold on to those last years of his contract.

Andre Villas-Boas

He said: “I have seen in the press that there is reported interest, but we want the player to stay on and hold on to those last years of his contract. In the end the player is committed to the club and the club is committed to the player.

“The player at the moment is our top goal scorer and he is chasing the European record for the club as well which is important for his individual motivation. I think he is extremely happy, not only because of what he has achieved, but also because of the smile on his face.

“He has had a better start than he had last year. That is an impressive goals tally and he is a player that everyone cherishes.”

Fourth-placed Spurs, who are 11/8 to finish in the Premier League’s top four this season and 6/1 to win the Europa League, can be backed at 10/1 to beat Everton 1-0 at Goodison Park on Sunday, with Defoe available at 9/2 to open the scoring against Roberto Martinez’s team.

Villas-Boas calls for quick fix

Andre Villas-Boas has demanded a response from his Tottenham players from Sunday’s Premier League “wake-up call” against West Ham.

Villas-Boas calls for quick fix

The north Londoners had hopes of joining Arsenal and Liverpool at the top of the table but were left reeling as three goals in 13 second-half minutes secured Sam Allardyce’s side a first top-flight win at White Hart Lane since 1999.

Winston Reid, Ricardo Vaz Te and Ravel Morrison supplied the killer blows as Tottenham fell to a second top-flight defeat of the season so far.

“It is (a wake-up call),” he said. “This fixture was a bit dangerous.

“If we won everything [it] would be spectacular but if you draw or lose you drop into a position you don’t want to be. Either way, we have done well so far.”

The Portuguese coach felt his players never came to terms with West Ham’s physical approach and called for an immediate response when Tottenham travel to take on Aston Villa on 20th October.

He added: “The second half we were not first to the ball in the 50-50 duels. They were a bit more aggressive and punished us.

“We have conceded three goals but before we were the team who conceded the least chances. This time West Ham managed to surprise us and we have to bounce back.”

Aston Villa are quoted 14/5 in the match betting and the draw is available to back at 13/5. The Tottenham away victory is available at 10/11 in the 90 minutes market.

Villas Boas desperate for new arrivals

Tottenham Hotspur head coach Andre Villas Boas is desperate to bolster his squad before the transfer window closes later this month.

Villas Boas desperate for new arrivals

Villas-Boas is waiting for the sale of Luka Modric to Real Madrid to go through though before adding any new names to his depleted squad.

We have been very, very active looking for different solutions. For one reason or another, it has not happened so far.

Andre Villas-Boas

Spurs’ only senior striker is Jermain Defoe, who scored in the 2-1 defeat at Newcastle United on Saturday, and Villas-Boas has targeted that part of his side for strengthening although he is also expected to snap up Raul Merieles to replace Modric.

The former FC Porto and Chelsea boss said: “We have been very, very active looking for different solutions. For one reason or another, it has not happened so far.

“But we are confident we can close it down in the next couple of days. If that is the case we will further strengthen the squad with what we are looking for.

“Negotiations are ongoing for Luka Modric so that transfer could happen soon.”

Spurs are 15/8 to finish in the top four of the Premier League this season and are 14/1 to win the Europa League which they qualified for by finishing fourth under Harry Redknapp’s guidance last season.

Loss intensifies pressure on Villas-Boas

Loss intensifies pressure on Villas-Boas

Chelsea boss Andre Villas-Boas has admitted that Saturday’s 1-0 defeat at West Brom has increased the pressure on him.

The Blues have won only three of their last 12 Premier League matches and are struggling to reach the quarter-finals of the Champions League after losing 3-1 to Napoli in the first leg of last month’s last-16 encounter in Italy.

Will this result increase pressure on me? You have to agree with it.

Andre Villas-Boas

A late Gareth McAuley goal piled the pressure on Villas-Boas, whose side are 6/4 to finish in the top four of the Premier League and 25/1 to win the Champions League.

Arsenal are 8/13 to finish in the top four after securing a 2-1 win at Liverpool on the back of last weekend’s amazing 5-2 victory over Tottenham.

Villas-Boas said: “Will this result increase pressure on me? You have to agree with it. We are in the same position, fifth, but we are now three points behind Arsenal. It is a big, big disappointment. Every defeat Chelsea suffers piles more pressure on any manager.

“Today is acceptable that pressure piles on a bit more. We have responsibilities to the fans and the club and we did not perform.

“At the moment we just have to go on with our job and everyone must do better, players and manager for sure on that one. We have to improve and there is no need for the owner to back us after such a poor display.

“Am I the right man for the job? Yes. I wouldn’t have taken it if I didn’t think that.”

Honeymoon period over for AVB?

Chelsea are odds-on to finish the season without a trophy and bet365 are 5/1 about Andre Villas-Boas not lasting the season in the Stamford Bridge dugout.

bet365 spokesman Steve Freeth said: “Our 1/9 about him seeing out the campaign suggests AVB won’t be collecting his P45 just yet, but his side are leaking goals and not winning football matches and that’s not ideal in this results industry.”

bet365 are also betting on Chelsea’s finishing position with 3rd the firm’s favourite at 15/8 and the Blues are 5/4 to keep a clean sheet at Ewood Park.
