Great Scott? Punters adamant Adam Scott can go one better

Adam Scott is currently top of bet365’s liabilities for the forthcoming US Masters – with the firm also seeing support for Bubba Watson and Ian Poulter.

Great Scott? Punters adamant Adam Scott can go one better

bet365 spokesman Steve Freeth reflected on Scott’s agonisingly close call in last year’s event: “Scott probably won’t want reminding he was 1/66 in-play before his collapse in last year’s Open, but with solid Masters form behind him over the last three outings, he’s the one that’s attracted the most attention and one we’re certainly not cheering to end his major wait.”

Els makes Open win look easy

Els makes Open win look easyErnie Els came from nowhere to capitalise on Adam Scott’s collapse to win the Open Championship at Royal Lytham & St Annes by one shot.

The veteran South African, nicknamed ‘The Big Easy’, was five shots behind overnight leader Scott at the turn and was still four shots off the Australian with only three holes to play.

But the three birdies he fired on the back nine, including one from 18 feet on the final hole, helped Els finish on a two-under-par 68 to finish on seven under for the tournament.

lot of people never thought I would win but I started believing this year, getting a lot of help from my family and the professionals around me. I have amazing people around me.

And it turned out to be enough to secure Els the Claret Jug - a fourth career major – and his first since capturing this championship in 2002 as Scott floundered to finish with four consecutive bogeys.

Tiger Woods and Brandt Snedeker both finished tied for third on three under, while Luke Donald was a shot further back.

Afterwards, a delighted Els said: “I am just numb at the moment, I feel for Adam Scott, he is a great friend of mine. We both wanted to win so badly, but I really feel for him. That is the nature of the beast, that is why we are out here.

“It was my time. I was hoping at best a play-off. A lot of people never thought I would win but I started believing this year, getting a lot of help from my family and the professionals around me. I have amazing people around me.”

Scott, who looked in control and destined to secure his first major when he tied the course record with a 64 in the first round, added on BBC Sport: “I’m really disappointed I hit a poor shot on each of the four holes and a course like this punishes you.

“I played so beautifully for the rest of the week I could not let this get me down. When I hit that shot into the green on the last I was confident that I could roll it in and earn myself some extra holes but it was not to be and that is golf.”

Els can now be backed at 80/1 to win the 2013 US Masters, while Scott is 33/1to break his duck in a major at the tournament.

Scott sets the pace with opening 64

Scott sets the pace with opening 64

Australian Adam Scott has taken the early lead at the Open Championship, shooting a superb course record-equalling 64 to set the pace at 6-under par.

Scott, who is 15/2 to win his first Major title at Royal Lytham, rolled in eight birdies to head the field, dropping a shot at the last to finish on a rare negative note.

We had ideal conditions and we don’t know what will be thrown at us the rest of the week.

Afterwards, a happy Scott told the BBC: “I am very happy with that round. It is a great start to the week and better than I expected myself this morning.

“We had ideal conditions and we don’t know what will be thrown at us the rest of the week. I hit some good shots but the conditions were perfect.”

One shot behind Scott is 1999 Open champion Paul Lawrie, who fired a fine 65, and the Scot stands alongside American Zach Johnson and Belgium’s Nicolas Colsaerts on 5-under par.

Lawrie is now 16/1 to win a second Open crown, while former Masters champion Johnson is 14/1.

Reigning Masters champion Bubba Watson started well with a 3-under par 67, with Ernie Els matching the American’s score, as did Northern Ireland’s Graeme McDowell.

Tiger Woods, 11/2 to win his 15th Major, is also on 3-under having made a flying start with four birdies in his opening seven holes.

Defending champion Darren Clarke suffered a disappointing day playing with Johnson, ending with a 6-over par round of 76, while Lee Westwood is 3-over par after a 73.
