Arsene Wenger cool over midfield link-up

Santi Cazorla could be back in action against Norwich City on Saturday.

Wenger cool over midfield link-up

Arsene Wenger says his focus is on his Arsenal team as a whole and not the potential midfield pairing of record signing Mesut Ozil and Santi Cazorla.

Ozil has shaken off a slight knock picked up on international duty with Germany to be ready to face Norwich City on Saturday, with Cazorla likely to be included in the matchday squad after shrugging off an ankle injury which has kept him sidelined since early September.

I’m very happy at the moment with the team that has played up until now, so I do not expect anything special.

Arsene Wenger

However, Wenger is more interested in seeing his side continue their fine form of recent times, with the Gunners unbeaten in all competitions since the opening day of the new season.

“You want all of your best players to play together in a very positive way,” Wenger said.

“I’m very happy at the moment with the team that has played up until now, so I do not expect anything special.

“I believe what is important is that instead of focusing on one or two players is to focus on developing ourselves as a team, improving our team play because there is still room for improvement.

“There’s still the desire inside the team to do that.”

The injury news for Wenger is improved further with defender Bacary Sagna back in the fold after hamstring problems, giving the Arsenal boss plenty of selection dilemmas.

The Gunners, who have lost just one of their last 13 meetings with Norwich, are 3/10 to win at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday and 8/1 to triumph by a 3-0 scoreline, with Ozil 13/2 to open the scoring.

Wenger plays down Arsenal title talk

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has played down talk of his side being Premier League title contenders, as the Gunners aim to continue a superb run of form.

Wenger plays down Arsenal title talk

Wenger’s side are unbeaten since the opening day of the season and head to The Hawthorns to take on West Bromwich Albion on Sunday afternoon.

We want of course to win trophies, but that is all (still) to do.

Arsene Wenger

However, Wenger is wary of reading too much into the opening couple of months of the campaign, with Arsenal currently top of the table with 15 points from a possible 18.

“What is important is to put that all into perspective and you know that it’s the hype around the game,” Wenger told reporters.

“It is positive because it shows the huge interest, but as well people tend to judge the moment as the definitive situation – however, it is just a photo of the situation, of the moment you talk.

“We want of course to win trophies, but that is all (still) to do. The only way we have a chance to do it is to try to focus on the way we play.”

Wenger has one fresh injury problem for the trip to the Black Country, with French defender Bacary Sagna suffering with a hamstring injury and facing around three weeks on the sidelines.

Arsenal, who are unbeaten on their last six visits to The Hawthorns, are 4/5 to win on Sunday and 2/1 to keep a clean sheet, while in-form striker Olivier Giroud is 5/1 to open the scoring.

Wilshere urges Arsenal to move on

Arsenal’s Jack Wilshere has told his colleagues to banish the memories of a loss to Aston Villa as they prepare for a key Champions League play-off.

Wilshere urges Arsenal to move on

The Gunners endured a dreadful 3-1 loss at home to the Villans on the first day of the new Premier League season, but they have little time to brood on that result.

We have got a big qualifier coming up and there can be no mistakes now.

Jack Wilshere

On Wednesday they head to Turkey to take on Fenerbahce in the first leg of their Champions League play-off, with the prize a place in the group stage of the competition.

And Wilshere told BBC Sport: “We are not happy, we have got to look at ourselves.

“We have got a big qualifier coming up and there can be no mistakes now – we have got to push on.

“We have got to pick ourselves up and we need to put in better performances and win games.”

Arsenal are 6/4 to win on Wednesday evening and 23/10 to secure a draw, while they are 1/3 to safely to progress to the group stage.

They have a number of injuries to concern them for their trip to Istanbul, with Kieran Gibbs (face), Bacary Sagna (neck) and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (knee) suffering knocks against Villa on Saturday.

Defensive pair Thomas Vermaelen and Nacho Monreal are both currently sidelined by back injuries, with midfielder Mikel Arteta being troubled by a thigh problem.

Arteta ready to end Premier League title drought

Arsenal midfielder Mikel Arteta, who could be out for up to six weeks after suffering a thigh injury inn training, thinks the Gunners can win this season’s Premier League title.

Arteta ready to end Premie League title drought

Since securing the title in the 2003-04 campaign, Arsene Wenger’s team has flattered to deceive, but former Everton star Arteta believes it is time to end a decade of under-achievement. The Gunners are available at 10/1 to win the 2013-14 Premier League title outright.

The 31-year-old Spaniard points out that Chelsea, Manchester United and Manchester City all have new managers this season while Tottenham are unsure whether Gareth Bale will still be at White Hart Lane in three weeks’ time.

We think we can win the title this season.

Mikel Arteta

“The club is very ambitious for this year,” said Arteta. “Everyone in the club is happy, nobody wants to leave. We saw a few players released with the intention of bringing some new players in and I think that’s what we are trying to do to give us a better chance of winning the title.

“There is no clear favourite for the title this year. You never know, someone could respond from the start and boom, away they go.

“We think we can win the title this season. If we don’t believe that, we won’t do it. It is going to be the most difficult Premier League by far because we are talking about four or five teams who could win it.

“I think we have got the ability to do it but we have to find the consistency through the year to earn the chance to get to April in contention and give it a go.”

Arsenal start their campaign with a home game against Aston Villa on Saturday which they are 2/5 to win. They are available at 6/5 to keep a clean sheet against Paul Lambert’s side.

Wenger tips Arsenal to challenge for Premier League title

Arsene Wenger is confident that his Arsenal side can end their trophy drought and clinch this season’s Premier League title.

Wenger tips Arsenal to challenge

The Gunners have not secured the Premier League crown since the 2003-04 season and have finished either third or fourth in each of the last eight campaigns.

Why should I sit here and say to you we can absolutely not win the title with the players we have?

Arsene Wenger

However, despite so far this summer failing to land Liverpool striker Luis Suarez, Wenger has faith in a squad which has only been bolstered since the end of last season by the capture of the young French forward Yaya Sanogo on a free transfer.

Arsenal are 9/1 to win the 2013-14 Premier League title outright, while Manchester City can be backed at 9/4, Manchester United at 5/2 and Chelsea at 9/4.

When asked if his side could challenge for the title this season, Wenger replied: “Yes, of course. I am confident. Why should I sit here and say to you we can absolutely not win the title with the players we have?

“We have one month in front of us and we will work very hard to strengthen our squad, without naming any specific names, because I do not believe that will make negotiations easier.

“When you want to buy any player you need the agreement of the club, of the player and you need to agree a price, so you need three agreements.

“What is important is we focus on the players we have, that we are not too much drawn into these stories.”

Premier League Transfer News Wenger cautious on Suarez coup

Arsene Wenger has revealed Arsenal are “not close” to pulling off the high-profile summer signing of striker Luis Suarez from Liverpool.

Premier League Transfer News Wenger cautious on Suarez coup

The north Londoners have made two close-season offers to tempt the controversial Uruguayan to the Emirates Stadium – the second being a club-record £40million plus £1.

Anfield officials have so resisted all bids for the 26-year-old but Wenger said he was prepared to play the waiting game.

“We are not close to signing Suarez…or anyone else,” he said.

“We are ready to do quick deals but all the transfers do not depend only on us. We are prepared to wait.”

The Gunners have already lost out on the signing of new Napoli striker Gonzalo Higuain and Wenger said it was important that he put quality ahead of quantity in what could prove to be a crucial recruitment drive.

The Frenchman added Arsenal will be competitive next season – regardless of whether he was successful in his efforts to strengthen the squad.

“With or without additions we can be title challengers next season,” he said.

“We try to do the job and we will try to do it well, but nothing has been concluded with anybody.”

He added: “What we want is not a name but a good player. The name is less important. What is more important is the quality of the player. At the moment I must tell you we are not close to signing anybody.”

Arsenal can be backed at 9/1 in next season’s Premier League outright winner market and 10/3 in the top London club regional winner betting.

Wenger ready to commit to Arsenal

Arsene Wenger has held preliminary contract talks with Arsenal and says he is ready to commit his long-term future to the club.

Wenger ready to commit to Arsenal

His current deal expires at the end of the forthcoming season and earlier in the summer, he was linked with a move to Paris Saint-Germain.

The French club later appointed Laurent Blanc as manager, but some believe that this is only a temporary solution until Wenger becomes available.

However, speaking to several national newspapers, Wenger played down the PSG link, saying he was fully committed to the north Londoners.

He said: “I am committed to staying longer at this club. I’ve already had a chat with Ivan. It went very well, not a problem.

“The link with PSG is there because I’m French and I know the owners. But if that was the case then I would be there already. I’m not at PSG because my heart is with Arsenal.”

Arsenal have not won a trophy under Wenger for eight years, but the manager believes the tide will soon turn as they are now able and willing to compete with the likes of Manchester United and Manchester City in the transfer market.

The Gunners have been linked with Wayne Rooney, Luis Suarez and Gonzalo Higuain in recent weeks, and Wenger admits all three are “realistic targets quality-wise”, before continuing:

“We have better financial resources than the years before and it is resources we have created ourselves. That is massively important to us. For years we were out of the race for the top-level transfers but we are coming back now because we are in a better financial situation and also because of Financial Fair Play.”

Arsenal are 10/1 to win the FA Cup in the 2013-14 season, 9/1 to win the League Cup and 10/1 to win the Premier League for the first time since 2004. United are 9/4 to win the league, while City are 9/4.

Wenger focused on a solid start

Wenger focused on a solid start

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is determined to focus his players’ minds on the coming campaign rather than the transfer situation surrounding Robin van Persie.

The Dutch striker looks all but certain to exit the Gunners this summer, but Wenger is more worried about his side repeating the dreadful start to the season they made a year ago.

We have learned that for us it is vital for us to focus on the start of the season, rather than on any transfers.

Arsene Wenger

Arsenal lost four of their opening seven Premier League games last season, before recovering to finish in third place and Wenger is eager to avoid early setbacks again.

“After seven games we had lost four and we have learned that for us it is vital for us to focus on the start of the season, rather than on any transfers,” Wenger said ahead of a pre-season trip to Asia.

The Frenchman, whose side are 8/13 to finish in the top four and 12/1 to win the Premier League, is also aware that silverware has to be won to silence the club’s doubters.

He added: “We are now 15 years on the trot in the Champions League and I believe that shows that our model works.

“On the other hand we are very ambitious, we want as well to win trophies.

“It’s not enough just to be in the Champions League and we are focused on that of course.”

The Gunners are 20/1 to win the Champions League for the first time in their history, with Chelsea 14/1 to defend the title they won last season.
