Europa League Final Chelsea v Benfica

Rafa Benitez hopes his Chelsea side can finally secure some silverware this season by winning the Europa League Final after losing three finals earlier in the campaign.

Europa League Final Chelsea v BenficaDavid Luiz scored a brilliant goal for Chelsea against Basel.

After defeats in the Club World Cup final, Community Shield and Super Cup this season, interim Blues boss Benitez has guided his side into the Europa League final where they will come up against Benfica in Amsterdam on 15th May.

It’ll be tough because Benfica are a very, very dangerous team and hard to play against.

Rafa Benitez

Chelsea did so by coming back from a goal behind to beat Swiss side FC Basel 3-1 at Stamford Bridge on Thursday to seal a 5-2 aggregate victory.

Benfica, 5/4 to win the Europa League, were also given a scare before edging past Turkish side Fenerbahce in the other semi-final.

“We have one more opportunity to win a big title,” said Benitez. “We have lost three finals this season.

“I am really pleased for them and everyone here. I think we have had a good atmosphere in the side. The players are working hard.

“It’ll be tough because Benfica are a very, very dangerous team and hard to play against, but at least we are there. With the commitment and the quality, we’ll have a chance for sure.”

Chelsea, 4/6 to win the Europa League, still have eyes on a top-four finish in the Premier League and face champions Manchester United this weekend.

Chelsea, 1/12 to clinch a top-four finish, are 10/1 to beat Manchester United 2-1, with Fernando Torres available at 13/2 to open the scoring at Old Trafford.

Chelsea v Spurs – All to play Four! – Champions League Fight

Chelsea v Spurs - All to play Four! - Champions League Fight

Chelsea v Spurs - Tottenham Hotspur make the short trip to Stamford Bridge with Champions League places still up for grabs.

Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas has played down his return to Chelsea on Wednesday night and says he will respect the reception he receives from the home fans.

Villas-Boas returns to Chelsea with both sides looking to pick up three points that would strengthen their bids for a top-four finish in the Premier League.

Tottenham are fifth, three points behind Chelsea, and, with just two games remaining after Wednesday, the outcome of the Stamford Bridge encounter could prove crucial in determining where the respective teams finish this season.

bet365 spokesman Steve Freeth said: “Spurs started March as 2/7 shots to finish in the top four but they head to a ground that they haven’t won at since 1990 as 2/1 outsiders of three to do just that.”

Frank Lampard is still two goals short of breaking Bobby Tambling’s goalscoring record and bet365 go 7/4 about that happening before the end of the season.

Man City on target for silver lining

Roberto Mancini is looking for Man City to end the season with FA Cup glory.

Man City on target for silver lining

Manchester City remain on course to win the FA Cup for the second time in three seasons after defeating Chelsea 2-1 in Sunday’s semi-final.

Roberto Mancini’s reigning Premier League champions slipped 15 points behind rivals Manchester United with just seven games remaining in the race for this season’s title after the Red Devils’ 2-0 win at Stoke earlier on Sunday afternoon.

However, Man City can now round off this season with the FA Cup and second spot in the table if they overcome Wigan when they return to Wembley for the final on 11th May.

When we won the FA Cup against Stoke, it was a difficult game, and I expect the same against Wigan.

Roberto Mancini

Samir Nasri and Sergio Aguero scored in each half to put City in command, but Demba Ba set up a frantic final 25 minutes when he pulled one back.

City survived a late penalty shout when Vincent Kompany appeared to pull Fernando Torres’ shirt in the area, while Aguero was fortunate when Chris Foy missed what looked like a stamp on David Luiz.

However, Mancini played down those incidents as he is now targeting another FA Cup win, although he expects a tough game against Wigan next month.

He said: “It was a difficult game. The players did well to win this game, fighting for every ball until the last second.

“In the first half we had everything under control. When Demba Ba scored, it caused us a problem for 10 minutes.

“When we won the FA Cup against Stoke, it was a difficult game, and I expect the same against Wigan.”

City are 1/5 to win the FA Cup, while Wigan can be backed at 10/3, while the two sides meet for a dress rehearsal in the league on Wednesday at the Etihad Stadium.

Premier League – Top 4 no more? Spurs drift after Bale injury

bet365 have pushed out Spurs to finish in the top 4 in the Premier League from 4/6 to even money after Gareth Bale’s injury on Thursday night.

Premier League - Top 4 no more? Spurs drift after Bale injurybet365 spokesman Steve Freeth “We’re currently speculating on his injury of course, but there aren’t too many players in the Premier League whose possible unavailability would cause such a price shift.”

A statement on the Spurs website  said that William Gallas and Aaron Lennon, who picked up calf and knee injuries respectively against Basel, are also set to resume training within two weeks.

Spurs face Everton at White Hart Lane on Sunday, before travelling to Switzerland for the second leg of the Europa League tie on 11 April.

Their fixture against Chelsea, scheduled for 14 April, has been postponed because of Chelsea’s involvement in an FA Cup semi-final.

Bale landed awkwardly on his right foot during a challenge with David Degen in the closing minutes of Thursday’s first-leg clash, and was carried from the field on a stretcher, clearly distressed.

Spurs have not won a match in which he has not scored since 1 January.

Friday’s scan revealed Bale will be unavailable for two weeks, as will fellow injury victims from Spurs’ Europa League clash, Aaron Lennon and William Gallas.

Both Tottenham and Everton face a huge test in this pivotal clash at White Hart Lane as the battle for a top-four place nears the finishing line.

Premier League – Di Canio seeks wins not draws

New Sunderland manager Paolo Di Canio will send his side out on the attack in a bid to secure victories which will help them avoid Premier League relegation.

Premier League - Di Canio seeks wins not drawsDi Canio takes charge of the Black Cats for the first time on Sunday, when they face a daunting trip to Stamford Bridge to take on Chelsea, with the Italian eager to take a positive approach.

Defending is not in my opinion the wisest course of action.

Paolo Di Canio

With his side just one point outside the drop zone ahead of the weekend action, Di Canio told the Sunderland Echo: “I want to see more courage – more going forward instead of always looking backwards.

“Otherwise it is difficult to get out of this situation, difficult to get the two or three wins we need.

“I don’t think it is possible to set up defensively and look for seven draws, because if you are always defensive you are still likely to concede the one goal.

“We do have attacking players, our wingers are natural attackers, so defending is not in my opinion the wisest course of action.”

Di Canio has a number of injury problems to deal with for his first game as a Premier League manager, with Steven Fletcher and Lee Cattermole definite absentees, while David Vaughan and Carlos Cuellar are doubtful for the trip to west London.

Sunderland are 10/1 to give Di Canio a winning start and 9/2 to secure a draw, while they are 15/8 to be relegated come the end of the season.

Facist Di Canio handed safety mission

Facist supporter Paolo Di Canio has been given the task of saving Sunderland from the threat of relegation after agreeing a two-and-a-half-year contract at the Stadium of Light.

Facist Di Canio handed safety mission

Di Canio has seven games to ensure that the Black Cats escape the drop, with the Wearsiders just one point above the drop zone after a run of eight games without a win which led to the sacking of Martin O’Neill.

The sole focus of everyone for the next seven games will be to ensure we gain enough points to maintain our top-flight status.

Ellis Short

Sunderland are 7/4 to be relegated, with Wigan Athletic 2/1 and Newcastle United 16/1.

Black Cats chairman Ellis Short is confident that former Swindon boss Di Canio is the right man for the job, telling the club’s official website: “Paolo is hugely enthused by the challenge that lies ahead of him. He is passionate, driven and raring to get started.

“The sole focus of everyone for the next seven games will be to ensure we gain enough points to maintain our top-flight status.

“I think that the chances of that are greatly increased with Paolo joining us.”

Di Canio’s first game in charge is a tough trip to Stamford Bridge on Sunday 7th April, with the Black Cats having lost their last four clashes with the Blues.

However, they won 3-0 at the home of the Blues in the Premier League in November 2010, with Nedum Onuoha, Asamoah Gyan and Danny Welbeck their goalscorers.

Sunderland are 4/1 to gain a draw at Stamford Bridge and are 7/1 to keep a clean sheet, with Chelsea 1/3 to win the game.

Champions League – PSG stand in Barcelona’s way

Wembley will host the Champions League final on 25th May.

Champions League - PSG stand in Barcelona's way

Barcelona must beat Paris St Germain in the last eight of the Champions League if they are to have a chance of winning the trophy for a third time in five seasons.

The runaway La Liga leaders produced a dramatic comeback to knock AC Milan out earlier this week, winning the second leg 4-0 after being beaten 2-0 at the San Siro.

Barcelona have won the competition on four occasions and can be backed at 6/4 to make it five this season while PSG, conquerors of Valencia in the round of 16, have never reached the final of European football’s premier competition before.

Last season’s beaten finalists Bayern Munich, 9/2 to go one better this season, have been handed a mouthwatering last-eight encounter with Juventus.

The Serie A leaders had little difficulty thrashing Celtic in the last round and are 14/1 to win the Champions League for the first time since 1996 and for the third time in their history.

Surprise package Malaga face a Borussia Dortmund side that has been impressive in seeing off the likes of Shakhtar Donetsk and Manchester City this season.

Jose Mourinho’s Real Madrid team will be confident of reaching the semi-finals after being paired with Turkish side Galatasaray.

Real edged past Manchester United in the round of 16 and are available at 9/4 to win the competition for a record tenth time. However, they have not clinched the Champions League since 2002.

For the first time since 1996 there are no representatives from the Premier League in the last eight.

Champions League quarter-final draw:

Malaga v Borussia Dortmund
Real Madrid v Galatasaray
PSG v Barcelona
Bayern Munich v Juventus

FA Cup – United handed semi-final derby incentive

Manchester United will face rivals Manchester City in the semi-finals of the FA Cup if they can beat Chelsea in a sixth-round replay.

FA Cup - United handed semi-final derby incentive

Sir Alex Ferguson’s team, 3/1 to win the FA Cup, face a tricky trip to Stamford Bridge after throwing away a two-goal lead against Chelsea.

Indeed Chelsea, 2-0 down after only 11 minutes, almost won the match in the closing stages after goals by Eden Hazard and Ramires had brought them level.

Manchester City, 11/8 to win the FA Cup, had a far easier quarter-final encounter, thrashing Barnsley 5-0 on Saturday.

The draw means that a ‘smaller’ team will be definitely be in the FA Cup final in May after Wigan Athletic were paired with Millwall or Blackburn Rovers.

The Latics, 8/11 to be relegated this season, secured a shock 3-0 win at Everton on Saturday, while Championship duo Millwall and Blackburn played out a goalless draw on Sunday and face a replay at Ewood Park later this month.
