T20 Cricket – India to host Champions League

India will host this year’s Champions League tournament as the world’s best 20-over teams contest a share of $6million in prize money.

T20 Cricket - India to host Champions LeagueThe event, won by Australian franchise Sydney Sixers last autumn, will feature a qualifier and group stage but, unlike the 2012 tournament in South Africa, will not include English counties like Hampshire and Yorkshire.

“The CLT20 will return to India this year,” said N Srinivasan, chairman of the competition’s governing council. “It will be the third time India will host the tournament in five years, following the events in 2009 and 2011.

“The competition, which will again feature leading cricketers from across the world and some of the established legends of world cricket, will be watched and followed by equally passionate fans.”

Matches, totalling 29 in all, will be played between 17th September and 6th October, with the top three teams from the current Indian Premier League joined by Big Bash League duo Brisbane Heat and Perth Scorchers, a couple of South African franchises in Nashua Titans and Highveld Lions and Caribbean champions Trinidad & Tobago.

A fourth IPL team will feature in the qualifying stage from which the top two teams will join the eight already handed group berths.

New Zealand champions Otago Volts and their counterparts from Pakistan and Sri Lanka will also be vying for a spot in the tournament proper.

Former winners of the competition Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians are amongst the favourites to finish in the top four of the current IPL and therefore secure a place.

South Africa are 4/1 to win the Champions Trophy later this year while England can be backed at 9/2, Australia at 5/1 and India at 5/1.

Cricket – Confident Cook targets Nagpur victory

Alastair Cook insists his England Cricket team will not be complacent and they will be going out to win the fourth Test against India in Nagpur after taking a 2-1 lead in the series.

Cricket - Confident Cook targets Nagpur victoryAlastair Cook’s side cannot now lose the series.

The tourists sealed a seven-wicket victory on the final morning of the third Test in Kolkata after a few early alarms when they slipped to 8-3 in their chase for 41.

James Anderson bowled last man Pragyan Ojha with the tenth ball of the day, as India were dismissed for 247.

England lost Cook, who scored a brilliant 190 in the first innings and deservedly won the man-of-the-match award, Jonathan Trott and Kevin Pietersen, before Ian Bell steadied the nerves and hit the winning runs as England moved ahead in the series despite being beaten in the first Test.

England are 8/13 to win next summer’s Ashes series while Australia can be backed at 11/4 and a drawn series is available at 9/2 .

“It was a great performance level for four-and-a-half days,” Cook said. “Everyone performed from one to 11 and that’s what you need in these conditions. Our bowlers, on the first day, to keep India to 300 on that wicket was a fantastic effort.

“And after the start they got to get six wickets in that session yesterday really won us the game. It was a credit to the hard work they’ve put in that they can perform in these conditions.”

Beleaguered India lose Tendulkar

India team manager Shivlal Yadav has confirmed that Sachin Tendulkar will play no part in the one-day international series against England due to a toe injury.

Sachin Tendulkar has not enjoyed the best of tours.

It is the latest setback for the tourists who have endured a terrible two months in England. After starting the summer as the number one Test team in the world, they end it as the third-ranked side after being thrashed 4-0 by England in a series whitewash.

Tendulkar missed the opening one-day game of the five-match series at Chester-le-Street on Saturday when the rain-ruined encounter ended in a draw.

He is facing up to four weeks on the sidelines but no replacement will be called up to an India squad which has been beset with problems.

Zaheer Khan, Harbhajan Singh and Yuvraj Singh were all injured during the Test series, while Virender Sehwag, Ishant Sharma and Gautam Gambhir were all withdrawn from the limited-overs matches.

On Saturday, Rohit Sharma damaged a finger after being struck by a delivery from Stuart Broad and he has been replaced in the squad by batsman Manoj Tiwary.

The second match in the series takes place at the Rose Bowl on Tuesday and it is an encounter that England are 4/7 to win while the tourists can be backed at 11/8. Eoin Morgan is 9/2 to be England’s leading batsman while Tim Bresnan is available at 33/1.

Dhoni bemoans bad luck

India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni was left to rue more misfortune after rain saved England in the first one-day international and two of his players picked up injuries.

India have not had much to smile about this summer.

The tourists had made 274 for seven at Chester-le-Street on Saturday and reduced England to 27 for two before rain ended play for the day and the match ended with no result. The next one-day meeting is on Tuesday at the Rose Bowl and India can be backed at 11/10 to finally record a victory, while England are at 8/11.

However, India will have to do without Rohit Sharma, who broke his finger after being caught by a Stuart Broad delivery, while Sachin Tendulkar has a toe injury that will be assessed before Tuesday’s game.

“I thought whatever could go wrong went wrong (in the Test series), but it is always increasing the next game,” said Dhoni.

“It looks like we will be asking for more replacements because with Rohit it is almost 100 per cent sure that he’ll be going back after meeting the specialist.

“It doesn’t seem like he will participate in the series.

“With Sachin he is also going to see a specialist to look at his right big toe.”

Meanwhile, England captain Alastair Cook is hopeful Graeme Swann will have recovered from a virus in time to play at the Rose Bowl, after being ruled out of Saturday’s match.

He said: “I hope he’ll be all right, it is just a virus, you know how they can knock you for six very quickly.

“But he can recover quickly as well so hopefully Swann will be back by Tuesday.”

England clinch series whitewash

England will turn their attention towards the one-dayers against India after completing a 4-0 Test series whitewash against the hapless tourists.

Graeme Swann took six wickets as India’s lower order slumped again.

Graeme Swann took six wickets as England won the fourth Test at The Oval by an innings and eight runs.

It had looked as though India would gain some consolation after a summer of unmitigated disaster for them by holding on for a draw earlier in the day when Sachin Tendulkar, chasing his 100th international century, and Amit Mishra, put on 144 runs for the fourth wicket.

However, the tourists contrived to lose their last seven wickets for only 21 runs with Tendulkar falling nine runs short of his century after Mishra had been dismissed for 84.

“We had to work pretty hard for that,” England captain Andrew Strauss admitted after the victory.

We had to work pretty hard for that.

“When you enforce the follow-on, you’re always asking a lot of the bowlers especially on a flat wicket. They stuck at it. To bowl India out for 300 and 283 on that wicket is quite a performance.”

England face Ireland in a warm-up match on Thursday before playing a Twenty20 game against India at Old Trafford and then embarking on five 50-over encounters against the tourists.

The first of those is at Durham’s Riverside Ground on 3rd September, and England are 4/5 to win the series while India can be backed at 1/1.

Strauss focused on Oval win

England captain Andrew Strauss has warned that his side will not be distracted by rankings during the fourth Test against India at The Oval, which starts on Thursday.

England pace ace James Anderson is expected to be fit to feature at The Oval.

Having taken an unassailable 3-0 series lead, England will move above South Africa and India to top the rankings, but Strauss is confident that his players will focus solely on the job in hand, as they go in search of a series whitewash.

He told Sky Sports News: “We will approach it in the same way as we would any other Test. We’re desperate to finish the summer on a high.

“The work ethic over the last couple of days has been good and encouraging and I’d be very disappointed if we took our foot off the gas.

“We try and win every match we play and then rankings look after themselves. We’ve got to challenge ourselves to keep improving and working hard to improve.

“There’s always the temptation to take the foot off the gas and feel comfortable with what you’ve done, but that’s not the nature of international sport – you’ve got to keep pushing forward.”

England are 6/4 to round off a memorable summer with another victory, with Strauss 4/1 to be his side’s leading first innings run-scorer.

We will approach it in the same way as we would any other Test. We’re desperate to finish the summer on a high.

Andrew Strauss

Strauss is confident that paceman James Anderson will be fit to feature, having seemingly shaken off a thigh niggle to bowl in the nets on Wednesday.

“He seems absolutely fine,” Strauss added. “Like all these things it is a bit of a niggle and we will wait and see how he is in the morning before deciding.”

Anderson is 2/1 to be England’s leading first inning wicket-taker at The Oval as he bids to finish as his side’s leading wicket-taker in the series – he currently has 18 wickets, three behind Stuart Broad.

England celebrate emphatic victory

England usurped India as the world’s top Test team after a resounding victory in the third Test at Edgbaston.

James Anderson took four wickets in India’s second innings.

Andrew Strauss’ side won by an innings and 242 runs, bowling the Indians out for 244 in their second innings. The win sees England move to the top of the world rankings for the first time.

James Anderson took three wickets in the morning session, seeing off Gautam Gambhir, Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman, as India slumped to 116 for six at lunch, 370 behind England. Swann took Suresh Raina and Sachin Tendulkar was run out as the visitors’ day went from bad to worse.

Broads took two wickets in the afternoon session, with Graeme Swann and Tim Bresnan also getting in on the act. MS Dhoni and Praveen Kumar put on 75 to give the Indian fans something to cheer but the result was never in doubt.

England celebrated in a huddle at the end of the match and will now look to complete a whitewash in the fourth Test, which begins at The Oval next week.

England are now 4/7 to win the Ashes in 2013 while Australia are at 11/4. A draw can be backed at 9/2.
