Premier League – Defiant Redknapp refuses to give up

QPR manager Harry Redknapp has predicted that his premier league side may have to win five of their last eight matches if they are to avoid relegation to the Championship.

Premier League - Defiant Redknapp refuses to give upJermaine Jenas gave QPR the lead at Villa Park.

Saturday’s crucial 3-2 defeat at Aston Villa brought QPR’s two-match winning run to an end, although they did take the lead against Paul Lambert’s team after dominating the first half.

However, QPR are now seven points away from safety and, with games running out, are 1/6 to be relegated and 13/8 to finish at the bottom of the table.

Redknapp refuses to accept that his side are destined for the drop though, saying: “We need to win four or five games. It is not impossible. While there is hope, you keep believing.

“It is hard with the points situation, but we cannot be playing any better. We are playing very well, that is all we can do. With eight games to go, we need to keep trying to win the games. If we can do that, we can still do it.

“We could have been three or four goals up at half-time, it was that one-sided. Their goalkeeper [Brad Guzan] pulled off several world-class saves and then they break and score.

“In the second half, we did not start as well, and it gave them a lift. But even then, at 2-2 we gave a sloppy third goal away.”

QPR – Redknapp anger at cup exit

Harry Redknapp could not hide his anger after QPR’s embarrassing 4-2 defeat to MK Dons in the fourth-round of the FA Cup.

QPR - Redknapp anger at cup exitJamie Mackie’s QPR were humbled by MK Dons.

Rangers were simply blown away by the League One side who raced into a 4-0 lead at Loftus Road until Jay Bothroyd and Fabio reduced the deficit with two late strikes, and Redknapp, who made nine changes for the visit of the Dons, was scathing of his players who he said had “blew it”.

“I gave them a chance because they knock on my door and say they should be playing and other people tell me they are all good players,” said the former Portsmouth and West Ham boss.

“Well, they got their chance and they blew it.

“It answers questions – not for me because I already knew the answer, but for other people. Today they saw the answers.

“If you look at the team, what is it? An England goalkeeper, a right-back from Man United, a left-back in Armand Traore.

“You’ve got Anton Ferdinand and Tal Ben Haim, then Esteban Granero from Real Madrid. You’ve got Ale Faurlin, Park Ji-sung from Man United, Jamie Mackie, Jay Bothroyd and DJ Campbell.

“Surely they are entitled to beat a team from two divisions down? It tells me, like I’ve said all along, that I need to improve the squad.

“That is why I have gone all over Europe these last three weeks trying to improve the squad because we are short.”

QPR currently find themselves five points adrift at the bottom of the Premier League, and Redknapp admitted he was finding it difficult despite an improvement since his arrival, to make the strides necessary to secure safety with the squad currently at his disposal.

I need to improve the squad

Harry Redknapp

“We are bottom of the league because that is where we are,” he said.

“We have picked up in the last 10 games or so, picking up 11 points, and we’re getting blood out of stone at the moment.

“I know we need to improve and that is what we will continue to try and do this week, but it is not easy.”

QPR are 8/15 to be relegated from the Premier League this season, with Reading 4/9, while Manchester United are rated as 7/2 to win the FA Cup, with Arsenal 13/2.

Harry Redknapp coy on new arrivals

Harry Redknapp has revealed he may not open the cheque book in January if QPR are adrift at the bottom of the Premier League.

Harry Redknapp coy on new arrivalsHarry Redknapp replaced Mark Hughes as QPR boss.

The 65-year-old took charge of his first game as QPR boss at the weekend in a 1-1 draw with Aston Villa, and with the January transfer window just around the corner, fans will be hoping Redknapp can weave his magic in the transfer market to move the Loftus Road club to Premier League safety.

However, with QPR yet to register a win in the Premier League this season, Redknapp has warned he will not splash the cash unless his side have a realistic chance of escaping the drop.

“If you are still adrift in January what is the point?” said Redknapp.

“If that was the case I would advise the owners not to spend their money.”

“What are you going to do – load yourself with more big wages?”

“If we are in touching distance then I’m sure we will have a go and get one or two in but they can’t keep spending their money and upping the wage bill.

If you are still adrift in January what is the point.

Harry Redknapp

“You’ve got to see where you are in January. If you are in touching distance then maybe you can go and get a couple in who can make the difference and get out of it that way. If we can do that then maybe we will have a go.

“We are OK in some positions but desperately short in others. We are short of centre-halves.”

QPR are rated as 1/2 to be relegated this season, with Reading 2/5.

Harry Redknapp issues player challenge

New QPR manager Harry Redknapp has left his players in no doubt as to what he expects of them for the rest of the season.

Harry Redknapp issues player challenge

Redknapp takes charge of a side rooted to the bottom of the table with four points from 13 games, and which is now 4/6 to be relegated.

If the players try as hard as I am going to try we’ll be successful.

Harry Redknapp

“We’ve got to do better to give ourselves any chance of getting out of this mess,” the 65-year-old told the press on Monday morning.

“I need 11 people with ability to put effort in. If they don’t they’re not going to play and I’ll get 11 who do.

“I’m looking for people to graft and work.

“I’ve got no time for people who lose the ball and throw their hands up in the air or stand around with their hands on their hips. We are in a relegation battle.”

Redknapp replaces Mark Hughes with the club in a perilous position and believes saving the Hoops from relegation could be his toughest challenge yet. He saved Portsmouth from the drop and turned around the fortunes of Tottenham, taking them from the lower reaches of the Premier League to Champions League qualification, but admits the task at QPR is a difficult one.

Rangers travel to Sunderland on Tuesday evening and are 11/4 to keep a clean sheet, and 17/2 to pull off a 1-0 win.

“We mustn’t kid ourselves,” added Redknapp. “This is much tougher than those two jobs [Portsmouth and Tottenham] in my opinion, but I’m optimistic we can pull it off.

“If the players try as hard as I am going to try we’ll be successful.”

Onuoha – Win or bust for QPR

Queens Park Rangers defender Nedum Onuoha insists it will simply come down to a question of ‘who wants it most’ when he takes on his former club Manchester City this weekend.

Onuoha - Win or bust for QPROnuoha returns to the Etihad Stadium for the first time since his £3million switch back in January, determined to grab the point his team-mates need to guarantee their Premier League status. The Hoops are 16/1 to draw 1-1 on Sunday, and are 16/1 to keep a clean sheet. A win for the visitors can be backed at 18/1.

We have only one option on Sunday – we either win or else we could be going down.

Nedum Onuoha

But the right-back admits he is still hoping for the perfect scenario to play out, and City go on to lift the title, having supported the club as a boy and come through their youth ranks.

Onuoha made his last appearance in a City shirt just days before his move to Loftus Road, coming on as a late substitute in a 1-0 victory at Wigan Athletic.

And he knows all too well the quality his former outfit can call upon. The Manchester-born player insists: “If we go there trying to get a draw, you will get picked off.

“Things that might have happened earlier in the season don’t as teams are so desperate for points. Anything can happen. Technical ability can go out of the window, and pure desire comes into it, and that desire, plus tactical nous, can get you points at the end of the season.

“We have only one option on Sunday – we either win or else we could be going down.”

Mancini wary of battling QPR

Mancini wary of battling QPR

Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini has let his guard slip for the first time by admitting: “We have two fingers on the trophy.”

The Italian can put all ten fingers on the Premier League prize if his players beat Queens Park Rangers at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday. City are 14/1 to thrash Mark Hughes’ side 5-0 this weekend and are now 1/9 to win the Premier League title.

However, the cautious Mancini insists he will not allow any of his squad to think the job is over, and allow rivals Manchester United a last-ditch opportunity to steal the title from right under their noses. United are 6/1 to finish top.

We still have one more game, and it is a difficult game.

Roberto Mancini

Don’t forget all Premier League matches are covered by the bet365 100% Euro Soccer Bonus, where you could earn a bonus of up to 100% on your returns on pre-match accumulator bets.

Mancini has long asserted the mantra United were favourites due to their favourable run-in, which ends at Sunderland’s Stadium of Light this weekend.

But the former Inter Milan chief insists: “We have two fingers, but it is not enough, because we still have one more game, and it is a difficult game. My feeling is good after the Newcastle result, and so is the feeling of the players, but we need to play QPR in that mood.

“They are playing to avoid relegation so it will be a tough game. I don’t know if we can win the league, but it is in our hands. If we beat QPR we will probably win it. We have managed to keep the players’ feet on the ground – we did it before the United game, and we did it last week before Newcastle.

“We won’t change anything because if we don’t keep our concentration and prepare well for the game it will end up being very difficult. We don’t have pressure. Leading up to the Newcastle game, maybe we had some pressure, but not now, because we just need to play one game like we did at Newcastle.”

QPR are currently 9/4 to be relegated this season.
