Andy Murray confirms ATP World Tour Finals absence

Andy Murray has confirmed that he will miss the season-ending ATP World Tour Finals at the O2 Arena in London, which start in early November.

Andy Murray confirms ATP World Tour Finals absence

The reigning Wimbledon and Olympic champion has been sidelined since mid-September, having played a massive part in helping Great Britain reach the World Group of the Davis Cup by defeating Croatia.

I’ll be doing my best to qualify again for the tournament next year.

Andy Murray

Murray underwent surgery on a back problem soon after his efforts against the Croats and had held out hope that he might be ready to feature in London.

However, he has now been forced to admit defeat in his race to be fit and will have to wait until next year to make his comeback.

Murray’s withdrawal leaves just three players who have already qualified for the Tour Finals, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and David Ferrer. The other five qualifying spots are currently occupied by Juan Martin del Potro, Tomas Berdych, Roger Federer, Stanislas Wawrinka and Richard Gasquet.

Murray told the official ATP Tour website: “I’m really disappointed not to be playing this year, I love playing in front of my home crowd, it’s a great atmosphere.

“All the players look forward to competing in London and I’ll be doing my best to qualify again for the tournament next year.”

Murray can be backed at 11/8 to win one Grand Slam title in 2014 and 9/2 to win two, while he is 5/4 to miss out on another major title next year.

Nadal plays down US Open chances

The Spaniard will be the number two seed at Flushing Meadows following his wins in the two hard court competitions in the build up to the US Open, the final Grand Slam of the year.

Nadal plays down US Open chances

World number one Novak Djokovic is the number one seed, while Andy Murray is the third seed despite the fact he is the defending champion.

Nadal has moved ahead o Murray in the world rankings and is now ranked as the world number two thanks to his wins in Montreal and Cincinnati.

Former world number one Roger Federer is now the world number seven and the seventh seed for the US Open - his lowest ranking in over a decade.

Nadal insists that his wins in Montreal and Cincinnati count for very little and played down his chances in New York ahead of the US Open.

“If you ask me which way you want to enter the US Open, I will tell you that’s the perfect way to enter the US Open,” he said. “But that doesn’t mean that I’m going to play a great US Open. The only thing it really means is I was playing great during these two weeks.”

Nadal can be backed at 5/2 to win the US Open, Djokovic is 15/8 and Murray is priced at 2/1.

Men’s rankings: 1. Novak Djokovic (SRB), 2. Rafael Nadal (ESP), 3. Andy Murray (GBR), 4. David Ferrer (ESP), 5. Tomas Berdych (CZE), 6. Juan Martin Del Potro (ARG), 7. Roger Federer (SUI), 8. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (FRA), 9. Richard Gasquet (FRA), 10. Stanislas Wawrinka (SUI).

Rafael Nadal wary of Almagro threat

Rafael Nadal wary of Almagro threat

Rafael Nadal will defend a 38-match unbeaten record in the final of the Barcelona Open, where he faces fellow Spaniard Nicolas Almagro.

Neither Nadal nor Almagro have dropped a set in reaching the final on home soil, with Nadal having won the title in Barcelona in seven of the last eight years.

He will come out aggressive and my goal is not to find myself in defensive positions all the time.

Rafael Nadal

The 11-time Grand Slam champion holds a 9-0 career record against Almagro and Nadal is 1/12 to make it ten wins in a row on Sunday and is 2/7 to win in straight sets.

However, despite such an imposing record against his compatriot, Nadal is expecting a tough encounter, saying: “Almagro will be a tough rival.

“He will come out aggressive as always and my goal is not to find myself in defensive positions all the time, and even though it will be tough, try to move him around.”

Meanwhile, the man who beat Nadal at Wimbledon last year, Lukas Rosol, will face Florian Mayer in the final of the BCR Open in Romania.

On the WTA Tour, Maria Sharapova will meet Li Na in the final of the Porsche Grand Prix in Stuttgart after ending the run of home hope Angelique Kerber in the semi-finals.

Sharapova is 4/5 to defeat Na and take the title and is 11/4 to do so in three sets.

Injury ruins Nadal’s Olympic dream

Injury ruins Nadal's Olympic dreamRafael Nadal (right) will be unable to defend his Olympic singles title.

Defending men’s singles champion Rafael Nadal has been forced to withdraw from the upcoming Olympic Games in London due to an ongoing knee problem.

The 26-year-old had also been scheduled to carry the flag for Spain at the opening ceremony, but tendinitis means that he will be unable to do so or defend the title he won in Beijing.

It is one of the saddest moments of my career.

Rafael Nadal

Four years ago Nadal beat Chile’s Fernando Gonzalez in three sets to win the Gold medal, as the left-hander enjoyed a superb 12 months in which he also triumphed at the French Open and Wimbledon.

A clearly downcast Nadal confirmed: “I do not find myself in a condition to compete. It is one of the saddest moments of my career.”

The absence of Nadal for the Wimbledon-staged tournament will come as a boost to the other leading contenders, especially Roger Federer, who recently won a record-equalling seventh title at SW19.

Federer, a doubles Gold medallist alongside Stanislas Wawrinka four years ago, is 2/1 to win his first Olympic singles title, while home hope Andy Murray is 10/3 and Novak Djokovic is 11/8.

Meanwhile, organisers at Wimbledon have confirmed that the tournament will move back a week from 2015 onwards, to allow a three-week break following the French Open.

In 2015, the action at SW19 will start on 29th June and end on 12th July.

Nadal suffers shock Wimbledon exit

Nadal suffers shock Wimbledon exit

Lukas Rosol caused one of the biggest shocks in recent years at Wimbledon by knocking two-time champion Rafael Nadal out in the second round.

The little-known world number 100 beat Nadal in five sets, holding his nerve superbly at the end of the match to blitz the Spaniard out of the tournament with a brilliant show of power tennis.

The 26-year-old Czech player, who had never got beyond the first round at SW19 before, led by two sets to one before Nadal hit back to level.

But Rosol responded by taking the decisive final set, eventually prevailing 6-7 6-4 6-4 2-6 6-4.

Rosol will play Philipp Kohlschreiber in the third round after the German beat Malek Jaziri. Rosol can be backed at 28/1 to win the tournament while Roger Federer is available at 11/4, Novak Djokovic at 10/11 and Andy Murray at 5/1.

Nadal won the first set tie-break 11-9 but Rosol responded by breaking Nadal in the first game and held on to win the set 6-4. He won the third set by the same score only for the 11-time Grand Slam winner to dominate the fourth set, breaking twice to force a decider, which was played under the roof as darkness fell.

Rosol broke Nadal immediately and never seemed in danger of losing the initiative as he held on to complete a stunning success.

Defending champion handed top seed

Defending champion handed top seed

Defending champion Novak Djokovic and French Open winner Rafael Nadal will be the top two seeds at this year’s Wimbledon Championships.

Nadal was beaten by the Serb in the SW19 final last year but gained revenge for that setback by claiming his seventh French Open title earlier this month.

Six-time champion Roger Federer is seeded third and is 13/8 to win this year’s title, while Andy Murray is the number four seed. Last year’s semi-finalist Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, who beat Federer in the quarter-finals, is fifth and Tomas Berdych sixth.

The top ten seeds are completed by the Spaniard David Ferrer, Janko Tipsarevic, Juan Martin Del Potro and Mardy Fish.

In the women’s event the 2004 winner and French Open champion Maria Sharapova is the top seed for this year’s tournament, which starts on 25th June.

Sharapova, 11/4 to win her second Wimbledon title, eight years after she won the title as a 17-year-old eight years ago, was recently installed as the world number one.

Victoria Azarenka is the second seed, Agnieszka Radwanska, 25/1 to win the tournament, third and defending champion Petra Kvitova, who beat Sharapova in the final last year, is seeded fourth.

US Open champion Sam Stosur is fifth, one place ahead of four-time champion Serena Williams, while last year’s top seed Caroline Wozniacki is seventh this time.

The top ten is completed by Angelique Kerber, Marion Bartoli and Sara Errani.

Nadal primed for French Open

Nadal primed for French OpenRafael Nadal has his sights set on the French Open title after his win in Barcelona.

Rafael Nadal is in confident mood ahead of next month’s French Open after picking up his second successive clay court title in Barcelona.

Nadal beat fellow Spaniard David Ferrer 7-6(1) 7-5 to secure a seventh Barcelona Open title on Sunday, a week after coming out on top at the Monte Carlo Masters and the world number two feels he has found his best form heading into the French Open.

“It’s almost unimaginable to win here seven times,” Nadal said.

“It’s a special tournament for me, at home in my club. To win at home in front of the people you know is always more special.

“I played at a very high level to win in Monte Carlo and now Barcelona without losing a set, but I’ve been playing at a high level from the beginning of the year starting in Australia.”

Nadal is 10/11 to land the French Open crown, which would be his seventh title at Roland Garros, while world number one Novak Djokovic is 6/4.
