Defoe exit talk quashed

Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas has played down reports suggesting Jermain Defoe is keen to leave White Hart Lane and sign for MLS side Toronto FC.

Defoe exit talk quashed

The Canadian side are managed by the former Blackburn Rovers stalwart Ryan Nelsen, who also enjoyed a brief stint at Spurs at the end of his playing career.

The former New Zealand international has declared his interest in signing the striker, who has 18 months left to run on his current deal, but has hardly played in the Premier League this season.

The 31-year-old has been used in Spurs’ Capital One Cup and Europa League games and Villas-Boas insists he still has a crucial role to play at the club.

We want the player to stay on and hold on to those last years of his contract.

Andre Villas-Boas

He said: “I have seen in the press that there is reported interest, but we want the player to stay on and hold on to those last years of his contract. In the end the player is committed to the club and the club is committed to the player.

“The player at the moment is our top goal scorer and he is chasing the European record for the club as well which is important for his individual motivation. I think he is extremely happy, not only because of what he has achieved, but also because of the smile on his face.

“He has had a better start than he had last year. That is an impressive goals tally and he is a player that everyone cherishes.”

Fourth-placed Spurs, who are 11/8 to finish in the Premier League’s top four this season and 6/1 to win the Europa League, can be backed at 10/1 to beat Everton 1-0 at Goodison Park on Sunday, with Defoe available at 9/2 to open the scoring against Roberto Martinez’s team.

Gareth Bale urged to stay at Spurs

Tottenham legend Glenn Hoddle has hit back at suggestions that his top-four chasing old club have become a one-man Gareth Bale team.

Gareth Bale urged to stay at SpursAndre Villas-Boas’ side remain in the hunt for a top-four spot.

The former England and White Hart Lane midfielder, who was their stand-out player during the mid-1980s, has heard it all before.

Hoddle was the man credited with pulling the strings back then, and he can see similarities in the way in which Gareth Bale is now being built up.

Bale returned from injury on Sunday to inspire a dramatic comeback in the late 3-1 victory over Manchester City, creating the leveller and then scoring the third goal.

That win moved Andre Villas-Boas’ side back into the top four and the race for a Champions League qualification spot. Spurs are 10/11 to finish in the top four, while Arsenal can be backed at 3/10 and Chelsea at 3/10.

Spurs face another massive task this weekend when they travel take on a Wigan Athletic side that are also in dire need of maximum points in their battle to beat the drop. Spurs are 9/1 to win the match 2-0.

Hoddle said of Bale: “Gareth has been the star of the show so far but there are other top-quality players at the club who have contributed to an exciting season.

“If it was me advising him, I’d say don’t move yet because the manager has a super squad.”

Premier League – Top 4 no more? Spurs drift after Bale injury

bet365 have pushed out Spurs to finish in the top 4 in the Premier League from 4/6 to even money after Gareth Bale’s injury on Thursday night.

Premier League - Top 4 no more? Spurs drift after Bale injurybet365 spokesman Steve Freeth “We’re currently speculating on his injury of course, but there aren’t too many players in the Premier League whose possible unavailability would cause such a price shift.”

A statement on the Spurs website  said that William Gallas and Aaron Lennon, who picked up calf and knee injuries respectively against Basel, are also set to resume training within two weeks.

Spurs face Everton at White Hart Lane on Sunday, before travelling to Switzerland for the second leg of the Europa League tie on 11 April.

Their fixture against Chelsea, scheduled for 14 April, has been postponed because of Chelsea’s involvement in an FA Cup semi-final.

Bale landed awkwardly on his right foot during a challenge with David Degen in the closing minutes of Thursday’s first-leg clash, and was carried from the field on a stretcher, clearly distressed.

Spurs have not won a match in which he has not scored since 1 January.

Friday’s scan revealed Bale will be unavailable for two weeks, as will fellow injury victims from Spurs’ Europa League clash, Aaron Lennon and William Gallas.

Both Tottenham and Everton face a huge test in this pivotal clash at White Hart Lane as the battle for a top-four place nears the finishing line.

Tottenham – Dempsey targets top-two finish

Tottenham striker Clint Dempsey believes the club can finish in the top two of the Premier League this season.

Tottenham - Dempsey targets top-two finishTottenham are third in the league, six points behind second-placed Manchester City, having lost just two of their last ten games. They take on bottom side Queens Park Rangers on Saturday and are 14/1 to notch up a 3-1 win, with a 2-2 draw at 12/1.

We need to continue on this good run of form and get as many points as possible.

Clint Dempsey

Confidence is high at White Hart Lane, and with the returns of Scott Parker and Benoit Assou-Ekotto boosting the squad, Andre Villas-Boas’ side, who are 11/10 to finish in the top four, are targeting second place.

“That’s the goal,” said Dempsey.

“Everybody wants to be pushing for great things and doing something special in their careers. We have the quality in our team and there’s no reason why we shouldn’t think that.

“We need to continue on this good run of form and get as many points as possible. You want to keep your feet on the ground and know there’s a lot of hard work to put in if you want to accomplish your goals.”

Dempsey returned from a groin injury to score twice against Coventry in their FA Cup win at the weekend and is pleased with his progress this season.

He added: “I’m someone who likes to score or get assists so it’s good to be getting those stats up, contributing and trying to help this team do well. It’s going well but I still want to be better at what I’m doing.”

Villas Boas desperate for new arrivals

Tottenham Hotspur head coach Andre Villas Boas is desperate to bolster his squad before the transfer window closes later this month.

Villas Boas desperate for new arrivals

Villas-Boas is waiting for the sale of Luka Modric to Real Madrid to go through though before adding any new names to his depleted squad.

We have been very, very active looking for different solutions. For one reason or another, it has not happened so far.

Andre Villas-Boas

Spurs’ only senior striker is Jermain Defoe, who scored in the 2-1 defeat at Newcastle United on Saturday, and Villas-Boas has targeted that part of his side for strengthening although he is also expected to snap up Raul Merieles to replace Modric.

The former FC Porto and Chelsea boss said: “We have been very, very active looking for different solutions. For one reason or another, it has not happened so far.

“But we are confident we can close it down in the next couple of days. If that is the case we will further strengthen the squad with what we are looking for.

“Negotiations are ongoing for Luka Modric so that transfer could happen soon.”

Spurs are 15/8 to finish in the top four of the Premier League this season and are 14/1 to win the Europa League which they qualified for by finishing fourth under Harry Redknapp’s guidance last season.

Redknapp relishing the run-in

Redknapp relishing the run-in

Spurs boss Harry Redknapp says the battle with Arsenal for third place in the Premier League will go “right to the wire”.

Tottenham moved level on points with Arsenal following their 3-1 victory against Swansea at White Hart Lane on Sunday, but they sit in fourth place on goal difference.

We would love to get third – I would love to finish above Arsenal if I can.

Harry Redknapp

Redknapp is targeting a third-place finish for his side in a bid to guarantee Champions League football next season, and has challenged his players to maintain the type of form they showed against the Swans. The win ended a run of five league games without a victory and Redknapp says they must win five of their remaining seven games if they are to achieve their aim.

Spurs travel to Sunderland on Saturday 7th April and are 15/2 to win 1-0, while a 2-2 draw can be backed at 12/1. They are 9/4 to keep a clean sheet at the Stadium of Light.

He said: “I would take five (wins) now. If we get five we will have Champions League football next year I’m sure of that.

“It is hard to call where the results are going to come and who against and that is what makes it interesting.

“We would love to get third – I would love to finish above Arsenal if I can. If we get Champions League football we will all be delighted again.

“That is the key really, that is what we want – Champions League football next year at Tottenham.”

Redknapp plans to overhaul Arsenal

Redknapp plans to overhaul Arsenal

Harry Redknapp believes that after Saturday’s goalless draw at Chelsea, his Tottenham side needs to win another six games to secure Champions League football.

The Stamford Bridge stalemate leaves Spurs in fourth spot, five points ahead of Chelsea and with only eight Premier League matches of the season remaining.

We’ve got to make sure now that we win six out of the last eight anyway, if we can.

Harry Redknapp

Redknapp admits there is still a long way to go but has told his players that another 18 points from 24 will be enough to make sure Champions League football is back at White Hart Lane next season. Spurs are 1/7 to finish in the top four while Chelsea are10/3.

Don’t forget all Premier League matches are covered by the bet365 100% Euro Soccer Bonus, where you could earn a bonus of up to 100% on your returns on pre-match accumulator bets.

“We’ve got decent games, I think, not easy games, all hard games,” said Redknapp after the match. “We’ve got to make sure now that we win six out of the last eight anyway, if we can. You’d like to think we’ve got a chance of that.”

Meanwhile, Redknapp has not given up hope of overtaking in-form Arsenal, 1/16 to finish in the top four, and sealing third place.

“They’ve got some tough games. They’ve got Man City at home, Chelsea at home. It’s all to play for still,” he added.

Redknapp keeps his focus on Spurs

Redknapp keeps his focus on Spurs

Tottenham boss and favourite to be the next England manager Harry Redknapp insists he has “not even thought about” becoming Fabio Capello’s successor.

The former West Ham United, Bournemouth, Southampton and Portsmouth manager is 1/4 to be England’s next permanent boss after being cleared on Wednesday of tax evasion charges.

Capello’s departure was confirmed on Wednesday evening when the Italian resigned after holding talks with Football Association chairman David Bernstein. Capello was unhappy with the FA’s decision to go over his head and strip John Terry of the England captaincy.

We knew Fabio Capello was going to leave in the summer. I didn’t expect it to happen now.

Harry Redknapp

When asked if he wanted to succeed Fabio Capello as England manager, Redknapp said: “I’ve not even thought about it. I’ve got a job to do. I’ve got a big game on Saturday for Tottenham. Tottenham is my focus.”

Spurs are 6/1 to beat Newcastle 2-0 this weekend while Jose Mourinho is 7/2 to be the next manager at White Hart Lane.

Redknapp added: “They (the Football Association) will make whatever decision they want to make. Hopefully it’ll be the right decision for the country but my focus is all on Tottenham.”

Of Capello’s resignation, he said: “I was shocked. I was surprised. I didn’t expect that to happen. We knew he was going to leave in the summer. I didn’t expect it to happen now.”

 Fulham v Tottenham

KEY STAT: Eight of Tottenham’s nine league games have featured over 2.5 goals

EXPERT VERDICT: Tottenham are the form team in the Premier League right now and they look good value to beat London rivals Fulham. Spurs are playing with a swagger you would expect of a side who have taken 19 points from their last seven games and they look too good for the Cottagers.

RECOMMENDATION: Tottenham BET

—————————————————————

 Motherwell v Celtic

KEY STAT: Celtic have won eight of their last nine meetings with Motherwell

EXPERT VERDICT: Celtic of old knew how to win the big matches and this is definitely a big match. However, so soon after the European clash with Rennes and given the Steelmen’s stubborn streak on their own patch, defences could decide this game. Motherwell’sis as good as most in the SPL.

RECOMMENDATION: Draw BET

—————————————————————

 Wolves v Wigam

KEY STAT: The Latics have won four of their last five games against Wolves

EXPERT VERDICT: Take a chance on Wigan snapping their eight-game losing streak by beating struggling Wolves. The pressure is on home manager Mick McCarthy and the Molineux faithful won’t be slow to get on the back of a team who have conceded at least two goals in each of their last seven league games.

RECOMMENDATION: Wigan BET

—————————————————————

 Bolton v Stoke

KEY STAT: There has been at least two goals scored in the last 13 meetings between the teams

EXPERT VERDICT: Bolton have lost all five of their home Premier League matches this season, conceding 17 goals in the process, and are impossible to fancy. Even Sunderland and Norwich were triumphant at the Reebok so it is not all to do with a difficult fixture list and Stoke can add to the Trotters’ woes.

RECOMMENDATION: Stoke BET
