Mourinho warns Chelsea defeat could be disaster

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has warned his side that they cannot risk a second defeat in Champions League Group E if they want to progress in the competition.

The Blues opened up in Europe with a 2-1 home defeat at the hands of FC Basel, before back-to-back wins at Steaua Bucharest and Schalke got them back on track and positioned at the top of the group ahead of matchday four.

Chelsea welcome Schalke to Stamford Bridge on Wednesday evening, with Mourinho warning: “We are in a stable position to qualify in the Champions League, but if we lose again we are in a difficult position.

“So, Wednesday is an important game for us.”

Mourinho has vowed to make changes to the side who suffered a damaging 2-0 Premier League defeat at Newcastle United, having said after that loss that he had selected 11 wrong players.

The Portuguese added: “I will make changes, not 11 changes because that would be too much, but changes for sure.

“I don’t know my best team because we have this kind of performance.

“I know basically which is my best team, but it depends on the way we perform because performances and results push you for decisions.”

Mourinho will be without striker Fernando Torres due to a thigh injury, with Chelsea 2/5 to win the game, 6/1 to triumph by a 2-0 scoreline and 11/10 to keep a clean sheet.

The former Valencia playmaker has won bit the FA Cup and the Premier League during his time in England, while tasting both World Cup and European Championship glory with Spain.

And now Silva would like to add the Champions league to his list of achievements, with City well-placed to reach the knockout stages for the first time.

“From a personal point of view, the trophy I’ve not yet won is the Champions League,” Silva told the Daily Star Sunday. “Hopefully I’ll get a chance to win that one before I retire – that would be great.

“The Champions League is the real motivation. Every trophy you could win serves as a source of motivation.

“You want to get better each year and win more and more and, from a personal point of view, I want to win the Champions League.”

City currently sit second in Champions League Group D and could all but seal their qualification for the last 16 if they defeat CSKA Moscow on Tuesday.

The Citizens are 1/6 to win the game at the Etihad Stadium and 1/20 to progress from Group D, while they can be backed at 16/1 to win the Champions League.

Deflated Manchester United boss David Moyes has hinted that he does not think his team is good enough to win this season’s Champions League.

United followed up last weekend’s hammering by Manchester City with an embarrassing 2-1 home defeat to West Brom and they are now 13/2 to win the Premier League title outright this season.

The Red Devils began their Champions League campaign with a 4-2 home win over Bayer Leverkusen but face a difficult trip to Shakhtar Donetsk on Wednesday.

To win the Champions League, you need five or six world-class players.

United, 14/1 to win the Champions League outright this season, can be backed at 10/1 to beat Shakhtar 2-1.

Former Everton manager Moyes accepted that his side deserved to be beaten by the Baggies and is unsure of their capabilities of challenging for the Champions League this season.

He said: “To win the Champions League, you need five or six world-class players. Look at Bayern Munich, they have it. Look at Barcelona, who had it in the past and Real Madrid, who have maybe got it now. That’s the level you have to be at to win it. We’ve not got that yet but what we have got is experience.”

United’s start to the Premier League campaign is their worst since the 1989-90 season, with Moyes saying of the display against West Brom: “Disappointing performance, disappointing result. We never really got up to speed.

“We had a few chances, but West Brom held their shape and defended well.

“They always looked a threat on the break, in the first half especially and even more so in the second half. We missed that spark and West Brom deserved it no question. I can’t argue with that.”

Ahead of United’s Champions League Group A opener at home to Bayer Leverkusen on Tuesday evening, Moyes said: “The hope is that we get a partnership where folk are saying ‘my goodness, we are having to play against Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney’.

“I can only see Wayne playing up top and playing as a forward for us. We will try and get him up there, but Wayne’s game is a little bit more.

“He has developed into one of those centre-forwards who drops into spaces to pick the ball up.

“He plays in a slightly different way so you have to appreciate him for what he does and his style of play. That’s what he is.”

Rooney returned to action at the weekend in the 2-0 win over Crystal Palace and netted a late clinching free-kick after Van Persie had opened the scoring from the penalty spot.

The England man is 5/1 to open the scoring against Leverkusen on Tuesday, with Van Persie 10/3, while United are 8/11 to make a winning start to their European campaign.

Jose Mourinho hints at Chelsea return

Former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has dropped a major hint that he will quit Real Madrid at the end of the season and head back to England.

The Portuguese was speaking after seeing his side knocked out of the Champions League at the semi-final stage by Borussia Dortmund, with Mourinho having enjoyed success with the Blues during his time in charge between 2004 and 2007.

Jose Mourinho told reporters: “I know in England I am loved, I know I am loved by some clubs, especially one.”

However, Mourinho says that he will wait until the end of the season to make a final decision, out of respect for the Spanish giants.

He added: “I haven’t made a decision because I have a contract here. In football people break contracts when they want to, but more than the contract it’s the respect I have for the club and for the players.

“At the end of the season I want to sit down with the president and speak about it.

“I know that in England I am loved by the fans and the media, who are fair with me. They criticise me when they have to, but give me credit when I deserve it.

“But in Spain it’s a bit different, some people hate me.”

Mourinho has one final chance of silverware with Real this season, when his side take on city rivals Atletico in the Copa del Rey final.

Real are 1/4 to lift the trophy and 2/5 to win in 90 minutes, while Atletico are 3/1 to secure the Copa del Rey title.
