Dean Saunders sacked by Wolves

Dean Saunders sacked by Wolves

Dean Saunders has been sacked by relegated Wolves, the League One club have confirmed.

A statement on the official club website revealed assistant manager Brian Carey will also be leaving Molineux.

The club added head of football development and recruitment, Kevin Thelwell, will front the process for former Wales striker Saunders’ replacement.

A club statement said: “Wolves would like to thank Dean and Brian for their efforts in what has been a very difficult period for everyone, and wish them both the very best for the future.

“The club will be making no further comment at this stage.”

Wolves became the first team to twice suffer back-to-back relegations from the top flight on Saturday when two goals from Kazenga LuaLua gave Brighton a 2-0 victory. It means the west Midlands outfit will return to the third tier for the first time since 1989.

Having been brought in by Wolves in January to become the club’s fourth manager in less than a year, Saunders had hoped to avoid the unwanted scenario of suffering his own second successive relegation having taken Doncaster Rovers down to League One a year ago.

When asked about his chances of staying in the job at the weekend, the 48-year-old replied: “You never know do you? With so much money at stake, managers are getting sacked every five minutes.

“But I will get my head down, work my hardest and try my best. That is all you can do. Sorting this club out will be tough but I have got to do it.”

Brighton are available to back at 9/4 in the Championship to be promoted market, with Leicester quoted 12/5, Watford priced 11/4 and Crystal Palace available to back at 7/2.

The Championship – most competitive ever?

The Championship outright market which looks as competitive as ever. Bolton are favourites in the 2012/13 season

The Championship - most competitive ever?

bet365 spokesman Steve Freeth said: “Most of The Championship 24 managers will start the season in the belief that they could make the play-offs at least and punters seem to have the same mindset with a whole host of clubs being backed.

“The spotlight was on Lee Clark at Huddersfield due to his spending power but his business this summer seems to have gone under the radar and he looks to have assembled a squad capable of challenging for promotion.

“His Birmingham side are currently our worst result in the division.”

Clark a shoo-in for Leicester? latest odds @ bet365

Latest odds at Bet365

Lee Clark is 13/8 to be the next permanent manager of Leicester City with original favourite, Martin O’Neill, talking a walk in the market.

bet365 spokesman Steve Freeth admitted: “Punters were all over O’Neill like a rash when we opened the market on Monday evening, but he’s now drifting after reports that he’s distanced himself from the vacancy.

“Lee Clark has been receiving plenty of plaudits for the way he’s going about his business at Huddersfield and he’s been sufficiently backed to take favouritism in the race to take over from Sven Goran Eriksson.”

Forest start new manager search. Bet365

Nottingham Forest are looking for a new manager following the resignation of Steve McClaren after less than four months in the job.

Steve McClaren had an unhappy time at Forest.

McClaren resigned on Sunday evening and his departure will be followed by owner Nigel Doughty at the end of the season.

The former England manager described his team as “rubbish” following the 5-1 defeat to Burnley last week and Sunday’s 3-1 home loss at the hands of Birmingham proved to be his last game in charge. He was reportedly frustrated at being unable to bring in playing reinforcements on loan and decided he could no longer continue in the role.

McClaren oversaw six defeats in 10 Championship games and Forest now sit just above the relegation zone. They are 6/1 to be relegated but are available at 20/1 to be promoted.

The club can confirm that the search for a new manager will begin immediately.

Nottingham Forest

A club statement read: “He (McClaren) has left the club without compensation – nor will he be seeking any. The club can confirm that the search for a new manager will begin immediately.

“Mr Doughty has also announced his intention to step down as chairman of the club at the end of the season after 10 years in the role.”

McClaren joined the club in the summer following the sacking of Billy Davies, who lost his job after Forest failed to make it through the Championship play-offs for the second year in a row.
