Great Scott? Punters adamant Adam Scott can go one better

Adam Scott is currently top of bet365’s liabilities for the forthcoming US Masters – with the firm also seeing support for Bubba Watson and Ian Poulter.

Great Scott? Punters adamant Adam Scott can go one better

bet365 spokesman Steve Freeth reflected on Scott’s agonisingly close call in last year’s event: “Scott probably won’t want reminding he was 1/66 in-play before his collapse in last year’s Open, but with solid Masters form behind him over the last three outings, he’s the one that’s attracted the most attention and one we’re certainly not cheering to end his major wait.”

The 2013 Masters Tournament will be the 77th edition of the Masters Tournament, the first of golf’s four major championships. It is scheduled to be held April 11–14 at Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia.

The Masters has the smallest field of the four major championships. Officially, the Masters remains an invitation event, but there is a set of qualifying criteria that determines who is included in the field.[2] Each player is classified according to the first category by which he qualified, but other categories are shown in parentheses. Dates when a qualifying category will be completely determined are indicated in italics.

Golfers who qualify based solely on their performance in amateur tournaments (categories 6–10) must remain amateurs on the starting day of the tournament to be eligible to play.

1. Past Masters Champions

Ángel Cabrera, Fred Couples (11), Ben Crenshaw, Trevor Immelman, Zach Johnson (15,16,17,18,19), Bernhard Langer, Sandy Lyle, Phil Mickelson (11,15,16,17,18,19), Larry Mize, José María Olazábal, Mark O’Meara, Charl Schwartzel (18,19), Vijay Singh, Craig Stadler, Bubba Watson (11,15,17,18,19), Tom Watson, Mike Weir, Tiger Woods (2,13,15,16,17,18,19), Ian Woosnam

(Past champions not expected to play: Tommy Aaron, Jack Burke, Jr., Billy Casper, Charles Coody, Nick Faldo, Raymond Floyd, Doug Ford, Bob Goalby, Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Gary Player and Fuzzy Zoeller.)

Tiger Woods back on top of the world

Tiger Woods has returned to number one in the world after winning the Arnold Palmer Invitational by two shots.

Tiger Woods back on top of the world

Woods finished on 13 under par, two ahead of nearest challenger Justin Rose, to win the tournament for the eighth time. The victory was his third of 2013 on the PGA Tour and propelled him to the top of the rankings for the first time since October 2010.

I’m very pleased with the way I’m playing.

Tiger Woods

The final round of the event had been postponed from Sunday due to bad weather but the American held his nerve to go round in 70. He resumed with a three-shot lead and added three more birdies and dropped three shots.

His playing partner Rickie Fowler added to the excitement with three birdies in six holes, moving to within two shots of Woods with four holes remaining, but his challenge fell apart with a triple-bogey eight at the 16th.

Fowler finished tied on third at eight under with Mark Wilson, Keegan Bradley and Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano. Rose, who had been top of the leaderboard on the first two rounds, started play four shots adrift but claimed second place after sinking four birdies.

“I play well here, it’s as simple as it gets,” said Woods after the win. “I’m very pleased with the way I’m playing.”

Tiger Woods is now 3/1 to win the US Masters, while Rory McIlroy, knocked off top spot by the American, is 9/1. Rose can be backed at 18/1.

Scott sets the pace with opening 64

Scott sets the pace with opening 64

Australian Adam Scott has taken the early lead at the Open Championship, shooting a superb course record-equalling 64 to set the pace at 6-under par.

Scott, who is 15/2 to win his first Major title at Royal Lytham, rolled in eight birdies to head the field, dropping a shot at the last to finish on a rare negative note.

We had ideal conditions and we don’t know what will be thrown at us the rest of the week.

Adam Scott

Afterwards, a happy Scott told the BBC: “I am very happy with that round. It is a great start to the week and better than I expected myself this morning.

“We had ideal conditions and we don’t know what will be thrown at us the rest of the week. I hit some good shots but the conditions were perfect.”

One shot behind Scott is 1999 Open champion Paul Lawrie, who fired a fine 65, and the Scot stands alongside American Zach Johnson and Belgium’s Nicolas Colsaerts on 5-under par.

Lawrie is now 16/1 to win a second Open crown, while former Masters champion Johnson is 14/1.

Reigning Masters champion Bubba Watson started well with a 3-under par 67, with Ernie Els matching the American’s score, as did Northern Ireland’s Graeme McDowell.

Tiger Woods, 11/2 to win his 15th Major, is also on 3-under having made a flying start with four birdies in his opening seven holes.

Defending champion Darren Clarke suffered a disappointing day playing with Johnson, ending with a 6-over par round of 76, while Lee Westwood is 3-over par after a 73.

McIlroy gets Woods backing

Tiger Woods claims Rory McIlroy ‘has all the makings of being a great champion’ ahead of this year’s Masters at Augusta, which starts on Thursday.

McIlroy gets Woods backingRory McIlroy has been tipped by Tiger Woods to be a great champion.

Former world number one Woods knows what it takes to win a major tournament having won 14 so far in his illustrious career and he is aiming to move to within three of Jack Nicklaus’ record this week.

However, Woods feels 22-year-old Northern Irishman McIlroy could be the man who will stand in his way of securing the green jacket after his impressive 2011 campaign in which he missed out on the Masters following a final round collapse and won the US Open at Congressional by a record eight shots to help move him up the rankings to his current number two spot.

Woods, who is 5/1 to emerge victorious at the Masters, with Rory McIlroy 13/2and defending champion Charl Schwartzel 45/1, feels McIlroy has now displayed all of the attributes which could see him become one of golf’s greats.

He has all of the makings of being a great champion for a long period of time.

“He has all of the makings of being a great champion for a long period of time,” Woods said of McIlroy. “We have seen obviously what he did last year at The Masters and how he came back at the (US) Open.

“He led, what, seven out of eight rounds in major championships last year, which is pretty impressive.”

On McIlroy’s comeback from his Masters disappointment last April, Woods added: “It was cool to see someone learn from their mistakes like that. He was playing so well and he just had one bad round.

“It happens to everybody. We’ve all been in those situations. He learned from it, applied it and ran away with it – that was some pretty impressive playing.”

Woods slumps to miss the cut

Former world number one Tiger Woods will go away and practice hard after missing the cut at the US PGA Championship in Atlanta.

Former world number one Tiger Woods will go away and practice hard after missing the cut at the US PGA Championship in Atlanta.Tiger Woods struggled and missed the cut at the US PGA Championship.

Woods ended ten-over par after two rounds of the final Major of the season, having only recently returned to action after long-term injury.

However, the return proved to be unsuccessful as Woods found water on several occasions and also hit the bunkers far too often to make any impact on the leaderboard.

A disappointed Woods said after making an early exit: “I think I was in nearly 20 bunkers in two days and had four or five water balls.

“Now I’ll have nothing to do but work on my game. That’s going to be good.

“I think this is a step back in the sense that I didn’t make the cut and I’m not contending in the tournament, but it’s a giant leap forward in the fact that I played two straight weeks healthy.

“I showed signs that I can hit the ball exactly how I know I can – unfortunately I just didn’t do it enough times.”

I think this is a step back in the sense that I didn’t make the cut.

Home duo Jason Dufner and Keegan Bradley lead the way at the US PGA at the halfway stage, with Dufner 16/1 to go on and win the title, with Bradley 14/1.
