Defoe exit talk quashed

Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas has played down reports suggesting Jermain Defoe is keen to leave White Hart Lane and sign for MLS side Toronto FC.

The Canadian side are managed by the former Blackburn Rovers stalwart Ryan Nelsen, who also enjoyed a brief stint at Spurs at the end of his playing career.

The former New Zealand international has declared his interest in signing the striker, who has 18 months left to run on his current deal, but has hardly played in the Premier League this season.

The 31-year-old has been used in Spurs’ Capital One Cup and Europa League games and Villas-Boas insists he still has a crucial role to play at the club.

We want the player to stay on and hold on to those last years of his contract.

Andre Villas-Boas

He said: “I have seen in the press that there is reported interest, but we want the player to stay on and hold on to those last years of his contract. In the end the player is committed to the club and the club is committed to the player.

“The player at the moment is our top goal scorer and he is chasing the European record for the club as well which is important for his individual motivation. I think he is extremely happy, not only because of what he has achieved, but also because of the smile on his face.

“He has had a better start than he had last year. That is an impressive goals tally and he is a player that everyone cherishes.”

Fourth-placed Spurs, who are 11/8 to finish in the Premier League’s top four this season and 6/1 to win the Europa League, can be backed at 10/1 to beat Everton 1-0 at Goodison Park on Sunday, with Defoe available at 9/2 to open the scoring against Roberto Martinez’s team.

Villa v Spurs – Agbonlahor targets Tottenham upset

Gabby Agbonlahor is convinced Aston Villa can claim another prize Premier League scalp against Tottenham on Sunday.

Villa v Spurs - Agbonlahor targets Tottenham upset

The Midlands giants have already picked up shock victories against Arsenal and Manchester City so far this season and Paul Lambert’s men will look to stop the recent rot against the north Londoners when they visit Villa Park.

Andre Villas-Boas’s men have not conceded a goal in three straight wins against Villa in all competitions and will be aiming to bounce back from a surprise home defeat by West Ham last time out.

Agbonlahor says his team-mates have no reason to fear the capital club and is confident they will be competitive in front of their own supporters.

He told the official club website: “With a good crowd, good tactics and a good team spirit, you can beat anyone on your day.

“We have Tottenham now on Sunday. You always look forward to these big games.

“We know it’s going to be tough but we know it will be different from the cup one. We will try our hardest that’s for sure.”

Belgium striker Christian Benteke will be assessed by club officials in the hope he can shake off a hip injury for the visit of Tottenham.

Aston Villa can be backed at 3/1 in the 90 minutes market and the draw is quoted 5/2. The away victory is available to back at 21/20 in the same market.

Villas-Boas calls for quick fix

Andre Villas-Boas has demanded a response from his Tottenham players from Sunday’s Premier League “wake-up call” against West Ham.

Villas-Boas calls for quick fix

The north Londoners had hopes of joining Arsenal and Liverpool at the top of the table but were left reeling as three goals in 13 second-half minutes secured Sam Allardyce’s side a first top-flight win at White Hart Lane since 1999.

Winston Reid, Ricardo Vaz Te and Ravel Morrison supplied the killer blows as Tottenham fell to a second top-flight defeat of the season so far.

“It is (a wake-up call),” he said. “This fixture was a bit dangerous.

“If we won everything [it] would be spectacular but if you draw or lose you drop into a position you don’t want to be. Either way, we have done well so far.”

The Portuguese coach felt his players never came to terms with West Ham’s physical approach and called for an immediate response when Tottenham travel to take on Aston Villa on 20th October.

He added: “The second half we were not first to the ball in the 50-50 duels. They were a bit more aggressive and punished us.

“We have conceded three goals but before we were the team who conceded the least chances. This time West Ham managed to surprise us and we have to bounce back.”

Aston Villa are quoted 14/5 in the match betting and the draw is available to back at 13/5. The Tottenham away victory is available at 10/11 in the 90 minutes market.

Soldado seals Tottenham Hotspur switch

The Spanish international’s switch from Valencia to White Hart Lane has been a well-documented and drawn out one but the 28-year-old has finally passed a medical and has signed on the dotted line.

With the future of Gareth Bale with the Lilywhites still in the balance, the arrival of Soldado is a massive boost for manager Andre Villas-Boas, with the striker showing his class in La Liga for a number of seasons.

Spurs will be hoping their new signing hits the ground running when they face Crystal Palace on the opening day of the campaign on August 18.

Soldado joins Paulinho and Nacer Chadli as the new face at White Hart Lane, with the club hoping to secure a top four finish.

Spurs are 4/5 to get their Premier League campaign off to a winning start by beating Crystal Palace on the opening weekend of the season while Real Madrid are available at 5/4 to win the 2013-14 La Liga title.

AVB fears Mourinho factor

Tottenham boss Andre Villas-Boas (AVB) believes Jose Mourinho will be able to instil a winning mentality into the Chelsea squad once again.

AVB fears Mourinho factor

The Portuguese coach is gearing up for his first season back in English football having been sacked by the Blues five years ago.

During his first stint in charge of Chelsea the club enjoyed their most successful period to date, winning two Premier League titles, one FA Cup and two League Cups.

Villas-Boas was part of Mourinho’s backroom staff during his first three years at Stamford Bridge but will now be trying to stop him having taken charge of Tottenham last summer.

The Spurs coach knows what Mourinho will bring to the table and expects him to instil a ruthless mentality into the Blues squad, who were rarely beaten during his first spell in west London.

“One of his characteristics – and I don’t say it in a negative way – is to deviate attentions, positive and negative, in such a way that the team is only worried about winning,” said Villas-Boas.

Three of last season’s top four have changed their manager, including Chelsea, and Villas-Boas admits it will be interesting to see how quickly clubs adapt to having a new man in charge.

The Portuguese coach is paying particular attention to Manchester United, where David Moyes has taken over from Sir Alex Ferguson.

Villas-Boas admits United had something of a fear factor when under Ferguson’s guidance and is interested to see if Moyes can repeat the trick.

“The fear that came from playing Alex Ferguson’s sides made everything harder and that may still continue if adaptation is fast,” he added.

“That is something that I am curious to see.”

Only two of last season’s top six in the Premier League have kept their manager from the previous campaign, Villas-Boas and Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger keeping their jobs.

The north London duo will hope the consistency of management will work in their favour in their quests to win the Premier League, a feat Spurs are 33/1 to achieve, with the Gunners 10/1.

Spurs will be desperate to at least finish in the top four this season and they are priced at 2/1 to go one better than last season’s fifth-place finish.

Chelsea v Spurs – All to play Four! – Champions League Fight

Chelsea v Spurs - All to play Four! - Champions League Fight

Chelsea v Spurs - Tottenham Hotspur make the short trip to Stamford Bridge with Champions League places still up for grabs.

Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas has played down his return to Chelsea on Wednesday night and says he will respect the reception he receives from the home fans.

Villas-Boas returns to Chelsea with both sides looking to pick up three points that would strengthen their bids for a top-four finish in the Premier League.

Tottenham are fifth, three points behind Chelsea, and, with just two games remaining after Wednesday, the outcome of the Stamford Bridge encounter could prove crucial in determining where the respective teams finish this season.

bet365 spokesman Steve Freeth said: “Spurs started March as 2/7 shots to finish in the top four but they head to a ground that they haven’t won at since 1990 as 2/1 outsiders of three to do just that.”

Frank Lampard is still two goals short of breaking Bobby Tambling’s goalscoring record and bet365 go 7/4 about that happening before the end of the season.

Wigan v Spurs – Martinez warns of Bale focus

Wigan Athletic manager Roberto Martinez has warned his side not to focus on the threat of Gareth Bale when Wigan v Spurs match at the DW Stadium on Saturday.

Wigan v Spurs - Martinez warns of Bale focus

The Latics are in trouble inside the bottom three in the Premier League with just a handful of games to play, with Wigan 4/6 to be relegated.

We have to stay in the Premier League, that is what we want to achieve.

Roberto Martinez

On Saturday they welcome a Spurs outfit hoping to seal a top-four finish and secure Champions League football next season, with Bale having been the main inspiration behind his side’s fine campaign to date.

However, Martinez has urged his players to focus on all of their opponents and not just Bale, who is 15/4 to open the scoring in the game.

“We all agree Bale is one of the best players in world football, he will always bring an extra threat,” Martinez said.

“But if you want to beat a team like Spurs, with Gareth Bale or not, you need a very good level of performance.

“That is part of our aim. We have to stay in the Premier League, that is what we want to achieve.”

Earlier this season Wigan earned a 1-0 win at White Hart Lane thanks to a Ben Watson strike and they are 12/1 to repeat that scoreline on Saturday and pick up what could be a crucial three points.

Gareth Bale urged to stay at Spurs

Tottenham legend Glenn Hoddle has hit back at suggestions that his top-four chasing old club have become a one-man Gareth Bale team.

Gareth Bale urged to stay at SpursAndre Villas-Boas’ side remain in the hunt for a top-four spot.

The former England and White Hart Lane midfielder, who was their stand-out player during the mid-1980s, has heard it all before.

Hoddle was the man credited with pulling the strings back then, and he can see similarities in the way in which Gareth Bale is now being built up.

Bale returned from injury on Sunday to inspire a dramatic comeback in the late 3-1 victory over Manchester City, creating the leveller and then scoring the third goal.

That win moved Andre Villas-Boas’ side back into the top four and the race for a Champions League qualification spot. Spurs are 10/11 to finish in the top four, while Arsenal can be backed at 3/10 and Chelsea at 3/10.

Spurs face another massive task this weekend when they travel take on a Wigan Athletic side that are also in dire need of maximum points in their battle to beat the drop. Spurs are 9/1 to win the match 2-0.

Hoddle said of Bale: “Gareth has been the star of the show so far but there are other top-quality players at the club who have contributed to an exciting season.

“If it was me advising him, I’d say don’t move yet because the manager has a super squad.”

Premier League – Top 4 no more? Spurs drift after Bale injury

bet365 have pushed out Spurs to finish in the top 4 in the Premier League from 4/6 to even money after Gareth Bale’s injury on Thursday night.

Premier League - Top 4 no more? Spurs drift after Bale injurybet365 spokesman Steve Freeth “We’re currently speculating on his injury of course, but there aren’t too many players in the Premier League whose possible unavailability would cause such a price shift.”

A statement on the Spurs website  said that William Gallas and Aaron Lennon, who picked up calf and knee injuries respectively against Basel, are also set to resume training within two weeks.

Spurs face Everton at White Hart Lane on Sunday, before travelling to Switzerland for the second leg of the Europa League tie on 11 April.

Their fixture against Chelsea, scheduled for 14 April, has been postponed because of Chelsea’s involvement in an FA Cup semi-final.

Bale landed awkwardly on his right foot during a challenge with David Degen in the closing minutes of Thursday’s first-leg clash, and was carried from the field on a stretcher, clearly distressed.

Spurs have not won a match in which he has not scored since 1 January.

Friday’s scan revealed Bale will be unavailable for two weeks, as will fellow injury victims from Spurs’ Europa League clash, Aaron Lennon and William Gallas.

Both Tottenham and Everton face a huge test in this pivotal clash at White Hart Lane as the battle for a top-four place nears the finishing line.
