Midfielder Sebastian Larsson has said Sunderland will use their 6-1 defeat against Aston Villa as motivation to escape the drop.

After two victories in a row, which included a 3-0 derby victory against Newcastle, the Black Cats were brought down to earth with the drubbing at Villa Park that currently leaves them just two points from the bottom three in 17th place.

Commenting on Sunderland’s chances of claiming survival, Larsson insisted the pain of the loss to Villa would focus their minds as they prepare to face Stoke City on Monday night.

“It is embarrassing to lose 6-1, and we have got to use that. We have gone through the game very clearly and we have got to focus really hard and make sure we come out fighting,” said the 27-year-old.

“It’s got to hurt a lot after a performance like this – and it does, trust me – but we have also got to remember the positives, what we had done in the previous weeks and what we can do and how solid we were.

“We looked very good and there’s no reason why we can’t get back to that. We have got to try to focus on our own performance.

“Yes, you do know how many points, you look for other scores, but at the end of the day, we have got it in our own hands to get to where we want to get to and if we do that, we don’t have to worry about the rest.”

On his arrival at the Stadium of Light, manager Paolo Di Canio called each of Sunderland’s remaining Premier League games “cup finals”, and Larsson said it was vital that mentality was brought into the clash with Stoke.

He said: “The gaffer said that when he came in. We had six or seven games and they are all cup finals until we get to where we have to.

“Hopefully that will be on Monday night – but nothing is guaranteed, we have seen that.

“We have put in some terrific displays – we beat Newcastle away, we beat a very strong Everton side at home, and then on the other side, we go and lose to Aston Villa 6-1.

It is embarrassing to lose 6-1.

Bale landed awkwardly on his right foot during a challenge with David Degen in the closing minutes of Thursday’s first-leg clash, and was carried from the field on a stretcher, clearly distressed.

Spurs have not won a match in which he has not scored since 1 January.

Friday’s scan revealed Bale will be unavailable for two weeks, as will fellow injury victims from Spurs’ Europa League clash, Aaron Lennon and William Gallas.

Both Tottenham and Everton face a huge test in this pivotal clash at White Hart Lane as the battle for a top-four place nears the finishing line.

With his side just one point outside the drop zone ahead of the weekend action, Di Canio told the Sunderland Echo: “I want to see more courage – more going forward instead of always looking backwards.

“Otherwise it is difficult to get out of this situation, difficult to get the two or three wins we need.

“I don’t think it is possible to set up defensively and look for seven draws, because if you are always defensive you are still likely to concede the one goal.

“We do have attacking players, our wingers are natural attackers, so defending is not in my opinion the wisest course of action.”

Di Canio has a number of injury problems to deal with for his first game as a Premier League manager, with Steven Fletcher and Lee Cattermole definite absentees, while David Vaughan and Carlos Cuellar are doubtful for the trip to west London.

Sunderland are 10/1 to give Di Canio a winning start and 9/2 to secure a draw, while they are 15/8 to be relegated come the end of the season.

“But I never thought we would be 15 points clear at this stage of the season.”

United could land a domestic double this season as they take on Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in an FA Cup quarter-final replay on Monday, with the winner set to meet City in the last four.

United are 3/1 to win this season’s FA Cup, City can be backed at 11/8 and Chelsea are 7/2 to successfully defend the trophy.

“It is hard with the points situation, but we cannot be playing any better. We are playing very well, that is all we can do. With eight games to go, we need to keep trying to win the games. If we can do that, we can still do it.

“We could have been three or four goals up at half-time, it was that one-sided. Their goalkeeper [Brad Guzan] pulled off several world-class saves and then they break and score.

“In the second half, we did not start as well, and it gave them a lift. But even then, at 2-2 we gave a sloppy third goal away.”

However, they are through to the quarter-finals in the Europa League and remain third in the Premier League, and are 1/3 to finish in the top four and qualify for the Champions League next season. And Dembele believes they will regroup in time to get back to winning ways against the Cottagers.

Spurs are 15/2 to win 2-1, while a 1-1 draw can be backed at 7/1.

“Against Inter it was a different game to the one against Liverpool,” he said. “This one against Inter we were not confident, but against Liverpool we were.

“We had to work much harder but we are through and we have to take lessons from the game into the Fulham game.

“The thing is that if you go to a place with a 3-0 lead you take a different mentality. That was wrong.

“It didn’t work, what we wanted to do. But we are through and that is okay.”

He added: “Against Fulham we have to be fully concentrated and go for the win.

“They have good players and against big teams they always play well. They are a good team.”

Gareth Bale returns to the squad after missing the Inter game due to suspension, while Aaron Lennon is in line to start.
