QPR manager Harry Redknapp has predicted that his premier league side may have to win five of their last eight matches if they are to avoid relegation to the Championship.

Saturday’s crucial 3-2 defeat at Aston Villa brought QPR’s two-match winning run to an end, although they did take the lead against Paul Lambert’s team after dominating the first half.

However, QPR are now seven points away from safety and, with games running out, are 1/6 to be relegated and 13/8 to finish at the bottom of the table.

Redknapp refuses to accept that his side are destined for the drop though, saying: “We need to win four or five games. It is not impossible. While there is hope, you keep believing.

“It is hard with the points situation, but we cannot be playing any better. We are playing very well, that is all we can do. With eight games to go, we need to keep trying to win the games. If we can do that, we can still do it.

“We could have been three or four goals up at half-time, it was that one-sided. Their goalkeeper [Brad Guzan] pulled off several world-class saves and then they break and score.

“In the second half, we did not start as well, and it gave them a lift. But even then, at 2-2 we gave a sloppy third goal away.”

Redknapp takes charge of a side rooted to the bottom of the table with four points from 13 games, and which is now 4/6 to be relegated.

“We’ve got to do better to give ourselves any chance of getting out of this mess,” the 65-year-old told the press on Monday morning.

“I need 11 people with ability to put effort in. If they don’t they’re not going to play and I’ll get 11 who do.

“I’m looking for people to graft and work.

“I’ve got no time for people who lose the ball and throw their hands up in the air or stand around with their hands on their hips. We are in a relegation battle.”

Redknapp replaces Mark Hughes with the club in a perilous position and believes saving the Hoops from relegation could be his toughest challenge yet. He saved Portsmouth from the drop and turned around the fortunes of Tottenham, taking them from the lower reaches of the Premier League to Champions League qualification, but admits the task at QPR is a difficult one.

Rangers travel to Sunderland on Tuesday evening and are 11/4 to keep a clean sheet, and 17/2 to pull off a 1-0 win.

“We mustn’t kid ourselves,” added Redknapp. “This is much tougher than those two jobs [Portsmouth and Tottenham] in my opinion, but I’m optimistic we can pull it off.

“If the players try as hard as I am going to try we’ll be successful.”

Rock-bottom QPR are set to open talks with Harry Redknapp after terminating the contract of the former Manchester City and Fulham manager Mark Hughes.

A spokesman for Paul Stretford’s Triple S Sports and Entertainment company said: “Contact has been made between QPR and us as Harry Redknapp’s representatives. Talks will be beginning shortly.”

Former Portsmouth, West Ham and Southampton manager Redknapp has been without a club since leaving Tottenham in the summer.

Hughes, 49, took charge at Loftus Road in January following Neil Warnock’s departure and guided the club away from the relegation zone last term. However, QPR are currently at the foot of the Premier League table after failing to win any of their first 12 games of the season.

The Board of Directors wish to thank Mark for his commitment, hard work and dedication in his ten months in charge.

They have secured only four points so far this term and Hughes’ final game in charge proved to be last weekend’s dire 3-1 home defeat to fellow strugglers Southampton. That result left QPR at 4/5 to be relegated this season and 15/8 to finish at the foot of the Premier League table.

Speculation has linked Hughes with the sack for much of the campaign after he brought a host of big-name players to Loftus Road who have since flattered to deceive.

Club owner Tony Fernandes had issued statements confirming that he would not axe Hughes, but he appears to have finally lost patience with the ex-Manchester United, Chelsea and Barcelona striker.

A statement on the club’s official website confirmed the news, saying: “This decision has been taken after careful consideration by the Board of Directors, following numerous meetings over the last few days.

“The Board of Directors wish to thank Mark for his commitment, hard work and dedication in his ten months in charge.

“The Board will now be working actively to put a new managerial structure in place as soon as possible.”

Mark Bowen and Eddie Niedzwiecki will take charge for the trip to Manchester United on Saturday afternoon. QPR are 14/1 to win the match and 22/1 to grind out a goalless draw at Old Trafford.

Harry Redknapp remains confident that his Spurs side can qualify for next season’s Champions League, despite their hopes being knocked by a home loss to Norwich City.

Redknapp’s men were beaten 2-1 by the Canaries at White Hart Lane, taking their poor recent run of form to just one win in their last eight Premier League outings.

Spurs are now level on points with fifth-placed Newcastle, with Chelsea two points further back as the race for fourth spot hots up. Tottenham are 1/2to finish in the top four, with the Magpies 7/2 and the Blues 11/5.

However, Redknapp believes that there are still plenty of reasons to be optimistic, even if Arsenal seem to be set to ensure a third-placed finish.

“It is all still to play for though,” said Redknapp. “It is going to be close, but there are still five games to go. It is the team who wants it most.

“We would settle for finishing fourth, Champions League football is the key. It would be lovely to finish above Arsenal, but that is going to be tough now.

“It is still all to play for – Chelsea have to play Arsenal, Newcastle have to play Chelsea, Chelsea have to play Liverpool away, so who knows?”

Spurs can now turn their attentions to the FA Cup, with a Wembley semi-final date with Chelsea set for 6pm next Sunday. Redknapp’s side are 4/5 to reach the final, with the Blues 1/1.

Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp says he remains fully focused on his side’s FA Cup fifth round trip to Stevenage on Sunday.

Redknapp continues to be the favourite (1/5) to become the next England national team boss, but the veteran insists that his sole priority at the moment is helping Spurs finish their season in style.

“It is not a distraction, not at all,” Redknapp told reporters. “I have just been thinking about Stevenage all week, I can’t start thinking about anything else really.

Spurs are 2/7 to see off their League One opponents at Broadhall Way on Sunday, while they are 10/3 to go on and win the FA Cup for the ninth time in their history.

Redknapp will be without injured duo Rafael Van der Vaart and William Gallas, while Younes Kaboul is unlikely to feature due to a knee problem, but recent signing Ryan Nelsen may well be handed a club debut.

Tottenham boss and favourite to be the next England manager Harry Redknapp insists he has “not even thought about” becoming Fabio Capello’s successor.

The former West Ham United, Bournemouth, Southampton and Portsmouth manager is 1/4 to be England’s next permanent boss after being cleared on Wednesday of tax evasion charges.

Capello’s departure was confirmed on Wednesday evening when the Italian resigned after holding talks with Football Association chairman David Bernstein. Capello was unhappy with the FA’s decision to go over his head and strip John Terry of the England captaincy.

We knew Fabio Capello was going to leave in the summer. I didn’t expect it to happen now.

When asked if he wanted to succeed Fabio Capello as England manager, Redknapp said: “I’ve not even thought about it. I’ve got a job to do. I’ve got a big game on Saturday for Tottenham. Tottenham is my focus.”

Spurs are 6/1 to beat Newcastle 2-0 this weekend while Jose Mourinho is 7/2 to be the next manager at White Hart Lane.

Redknapp added: “They (the Football Association) will make whatever decision they want to make. Hopefully it’ll be the right decision for the country but my focus is all on Tottenham.”

Of Capello’s resignation, he said: “I was shocked. I was surprised. I didn’t expect that to happen. We knew he was going to leave in the summer. I didn’t expect it to happen now.”
