Premier League – AVB targets key games

Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas believes his premier league side will recover from Sunday’s setback against Fulham and qualify for the Champions League.

Premier League - AVB targets key games

Last season’s poor end to the season is still fresh in many fans’ minds but Villas-Boas is confident they will not make the same mistake this time around.

The margin over Arsenal is what we want to build and we have to get the most amount of points from the next games.

Andre Villas-Boas

The home defeat to Fulham, coupled with Chelsea’s victory over West Ham, saw Spurs drop to fourth in the table, one point below the Blues. They have a four-point lead over Arsenal, who have a game in hand, and are now 1/1 to finish in the top four. Arsenal are 8/11, while Chelsea can be backed at 1/7.

“The situation has shifted, it has become difficult,” said the Spurs boss.

“We have the direct games against Arsenal and Chelsea which can enable us to get back to third hopefully, or bring Man City closer to us.

“The margin over Arsenal is what we want to build and we have to get the most amount of points from the next games.

“After the international break we have to get back to business and do our job against Swansea and try to collect the points there to put us in a more comfortable position by the time we play Man City.”

Premier League – Defiant Redknapp refuses to give up

QPR manager Harry Redknapp has predicted that his premier league side may have to win five of their last eight matches if they are to avoid relegation to the Championship.

Premier League - Defiant Redknapp refuses to give upJermaine Jenas gave QPR the lead at Villa Park.

Saturday’s crucial 3-2 defeat at Aston Villa brought QPR’s two-match winning run to an end, although they did take the lead against Paul Lambert’s team after dominating the first half.

However, QPR are now seven points away from safety and, with games running out, are 1/6 to be relegated and 13/8 to finish at the bottom of the table.

Redknapp refuses to accept that his side are destined for the drop though, saying: “We need to win four or five games. It is not impossible. While there is hope, you keep believing.

“It is hard with the points situation, but we cannot be playing any better. We are playing very well, that is all we can do. With eight games to go, we need to keep trying to win the games. If we can do that, we can still do it.

“We could have been three or four goals up at half-time, it was that one-sided. Their goalkeeper [Brad Guzan] pulled off several world-class saves and then they break and score.

“In the second half, we did not start as well, and it gave them a lift. But even then, at 2-2 we gave a sloppy third goal away.”

Premier League – Dembele urges Spurs focus

Moussa Dembele insists Tottenham will be fully focused on Sunday when they take on Fulham in the Premier League.

Premier League - Dembele urges Spurs focus

Spurs have wobbled over the last week, conceding four goals against Inter Milan in the second leg of their Europa Leaue tie on Thursday, which was preceded by a 3-2 defeat at Liverpool last weekend.

Against Fulham we have to be fully concentrated and go for the win.

Moussa Dembele

However, they are through to the quarter-finals in the Europa League and remain third in the Premier League, and are 1/3 to finish in the top four and qualify for the Champions League next season. And Dembele believes they will regroup in time to get back to winning ways against the Cottagers.

Spurs are 15/2 to win 2-1, while a 1-1 draw can be backed at 7/1.

“Against Inter it was a different game to the one against Liverpool,” he said. “This one against Inter we were not confident, but against Liverpool we were.

“We had to work much harder but we are through and we have to take lessons from the game into the Fulham game.

“The thing is that if you go to a place with a 3-0 lead you take a different mentality. That was wrong.

“It didn’t work, what we wanted to do. But we are through and that is okay.”

He added: “Against Fulham we have to be fully concentrated and go for the win.

“They have good players and against big teams they always play well. They are a good team.”

Gareth Bale returns to the squad after missing the Inter game due to suspension, while Aaron Lennon is in line to start.

Premier League – Benitez eyes second place

Premier League - Benitez eyes second place

Chelsea manager Rafael Benitez has set his sights on finishing above Sunday’s opponents Manchester City in the Premier League.

A win for the Blues at the Etihad would take them to within a point of the current champions, who currently sit in second, and Benitez has warned City they would not be content to settle for third place. However, he has conceded the title is now Manchester United’s to lose.

This is a massive game.

Rafael Benitez

Chelsea are 12/1 to win 2-1 on Sunday, and are 4/1 to keep a clean sheet. Fernando Torres is 13/2 to score first.

“To finish as high as possible is a challenge,” he said. “So we’ll try to finish second if we can, you never know – this is a massive game, so let’s see where we are at the end. Until the last week, we may be fighting each other.

“My idea is to think about this one, because it will make the difference. If you are closer to City, you have to chase the second position.

“The other one (winning the league), it depends on United. If they don’t lose games and drop points it’ll be difficult. We just have to concentrate on us.”

Benitez is likely to field a much-changed line-up from the side that drew 1-1 against Sparta Prague on Thursday evening, with Frank Lampard, Branislav Ivanovic, Ashley Cole, David Luiz, Eden Hazard and Demba Ba all pushing for a start.

Premier League – Benitez wary of Arsenal threat

Premier League team Chelsea’s interim manager Rafael Benitez has warned his players they cannot afford any defensive lapses against Arsenal on Sunday.

Premier League - Benitez wary of Arsenal threat

The Blues have won just once in the league at home under Benitez and were forced to settle for a draw against Southampton on Wednesday after throwing away a two-goal lead. Arsenal visit Stamford Bridge looking to close the gap on the top four and Benitez knows the Gunners pose a sizeable threat to his side.

Chelsea are 20/1 to win 3-2, and are 9/4 to keep a clean sheet. A 1-1 draw can be backed at 6/1.

We have to defend as a unit, as a team, be more compact and not give them any hope they can score.

Rafael Benitez

“The team are scoring a lot of goals, as we expect them to, but we have to manage this advantage in a better way,” said the Spaniard.

“We have to be more clinical. We have to defend as a unit, as a team, be more compact and not give them any hope they can score.”

Benitez is backing his side to recover quickly from Wednesday’s disappointing result and is hoping to increase the gap between them and Arsenal, which currently stands at eight points.

“It’s always important when you have a draw at home to have a big challenge ahead of you,” he insisted.

“To have Arsenal is a very good thing for me and the players. They are a rival who are close to us. We have to use that as a positive.

“They are close (in the league) and if we win there’ll be a big difference.”

John Terry could make his first start since November, while Demba Ba is pushing to be selected up front ahead of Fernando Torres.

Premier League – Redknapp wary of strong Spurs

Harry Redknapp believes his former club and QPR’s opponents this weekend Tottenham are strong enough to field two teams in the Premier League.

Premier League - Redknapp wary of strong Spurs

Redknapp left White Hart Lane at the end of last season, despite guiding the club to a fourth-placed finish, and was replaced by Andre Villas-Boas.

They’re full of quality everywhere. It’s a similar group to the one I left.

Harry Redknapp

The former Chelsea and Porto manager has continued the good work Redknapp started at Spurs and the club is currently 11/10 to finish in the top four once again this season, while QPR are now 4/9 to be relegated.

Spurs are third, 26 points better off than Rangers, and are 5/6 to win Saturday’s London derby at Loftus Road.

Redknapp said in the build-up to the clash: “Spurs could field two teams who could compete in the Premier League. They have a second team who would hold their own at the top level without any problem. For a start, they have five top-class centre-backs.

“They can afford to let Danny Rose go to Sunderland on loan because they have people like Benoit Assou-Ekotto, Kyle Naughton and Kyle Walker in the squad. They have loads of top-class midfielders.

“They’re full of quality everywhere. It’s a similar group to the one I left but then Moussa Dembele has gone in and done well. They have an outstanding group of players, no doubt about that.”

Meanwhile, Spurs target Leandro Damiao has said he will remain at his current side, Internacional – for now.

Premier League – Laudrup rules out Michu exit

Swansea City manager Michael Laudrup has definitively ruled out allowing premier league scorer Michu to leave the club during the January transfer window.

Premier League - Laudrup rules out Michu exit

The 26-year-old Spaniard has proved to be a big hit since joining the Swans in the summer from Rayo Vallecano, scoring 13 goals in 20 Premier League appearances as Laudrup’s men have moved into the top half of the table.

There is no way he will leave. It is absolutely out of the question.

Michael Laudrup

That goal return has sparked talk of interest from a number of bigger clubs, but Laudrup insists that Michu is going nowhere and does not want to move on.

He told reporters: “There is no way he will leave. It is absolutely out of the question.

“One reason is because it is so difficult to get someone in right now and the second is that he is happy here and doesn’t want to leave.

“Newcastle have just lost their top scorer (Demba Ba) mid-season and that is obviously very bad, especially because it is not easy to find a guy who scores goals like him.”

Michu’s goal tally is the equal third best in the top-flight this term, with Ba having also netted 13 times, while Liverpool’s Luis Suarez has 15 and Manchester United’s Robin van Persie has 16.

Van Persie is 5/4 to be the leading scorer in the Premier League this season, with Suarez 9/4, Michu 14/1 and new Chelsea recruit Ba 10/1.

Chelsea – Ba signs in time for FA Cup debut

Demba Ba has left Newcastle United to join European champions Chelsea.

Chelsea FC - Ba signs in time for FA Cup debut

Striker Demba Ba is eligible to feature for Chelsea in their FA Cup third round trip to Southampton on Saturday, after completing his move from Newcastle United.

The 27-year-old, who has scored 13 Premier League goals already this season for the Magpies, has signed a three-and-a-half-year contract at Stamford Bridge and could make his debut against the Saints at St Mary’s.

When the club who won the Champions League wants you, the decision is very easy.

Demba Ba

A delighted Ba told his new club’s official website: “It was important for me and for Newcastle, to get my future sorted and now we can move on.

“Now they have the whole month to buy someone and for me as well, the sooner the better. Now I am here I just need to get settled in.

“When the club who won the Champions League wants you, the decision is very easy.

“This club is massive and that’s something that helped the decision a lot. It was not a hard one.”

Ba will bring a much-needed goal threat to the Blues squad, who have Fernando Torres as their only recognised striker, with Daniel Sturridge having left to join Liverpool.

Chelsea are 1/5 to move past Southampton into the fourth round of the FA Cup and are 7/1 to go on and win the competition, while they are 13/2 to win the Europa League, for which Ba will be ineligible.
