Defoe exit talk quashed

Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas has played down reports suggesting Jermain Defoe is keen to leave White Hart Lane and sign for MLS side Toronto FC.

Defoe exit talk quashed

The Canadian side are managed by the former Blackburn Rovers stalwart Ryan Nelsen, who also enjoyed a brief stint at Spurs at the end of his playing career.

The former New Zealand international has declared his interest in signing the striker, who has 18 months left to run on his current deal, but has hardly played in the Premier League this season.

The 31-year-old has been used in Spurs’ Capital One Cup and Europa League games and Villas-Boas insists he still has a crucial role to play at the club.

We want the player to stay on and hold on to those last years of his contract.

Andre Villas-Boas

He said: “I have seen in the press that there is reported interest, but we want the player to stay on and hold on to those last years of his contract. In the end the player is committed to the club and the club is committed to the player.

“The player at the moment is our top goal scorer and he is chasing the European record for the club as well which is important for his individual motivation. I think he is extremely happy, not only because of what he has achieved, but also because of the smile on his face.

“He has had a better start than he had last year. That is an impressive goals tally and he is a player that everyone cherishes.”

Fourth-placed Spurs, who are 11/8 to finish in the Premier League’s top four this season and 6/1 to win the Europa League, can be backed at 10/1 to beat Everton 1-0 at Goodison Park on Sunday, with Defoe available at 9/2 to open the scoring against Roberto Martinez’s team.

Clichy warns of hard away-days for Man City

Gael Clichy believes Manchester City must learn to win ugly if they want to reclaim the Premier League title this season.

Clichy warns of hard away-days for Man City

The French left-back admits he was left purring by the team’s impressive 4-0 opener against Newcastle United on Monday night. But the former Arsenal man insists it would be foolish to now get carried away by the plaudits which the display attracted.

Boss Manuel Pellegrini has opted for a rapid attacking style and will deploy the same tactics when the Blues travel to face new boys Cardiff City on Sunday.

At the end of the day the most important thing is getting three points.

Gael Clichy

Manchester City can be backed at 6/1 to win 2-0 at Cardiff and are now 7/4 to clinch the 2013-14 Premier League title outright.

Clichy, however, has warned there will be times this season when he and his team-mates must learn to scrap rather than entertain.

The 28-year-old insists: “When you play for a team like City you always want the three points. The manager’s idea is to play attractive football, to score goals and create chances.

“But at the end of the day the most important thing is getting three points. Hopefully we can carry on like this but, away from home, it will be a bit more difficult.”

Arteta ready to end Premier League title drought

Arsenal midfielder Mikel Arteta, who could be out for up to six weeks after suffering a thigh injury inn training, thinks the Gunners can win this season’s Premier League title.

Arteta ready to end Premie League title drought

Since securing the title in the 2003-04 campaign, Arsene Wenger’s team has flattered to deceive, but former Everton star Arteta believes it is time to end a decade of under-achievement. The Gunners are available at 10/1 to win the 2013-14 Premier League title outright.

The 31-year-old Spaniard points out that Chelsea, Manchester United and Manchester City all have new managers this season while Tottenham are unsure whether Gareth Bale will still be at White Hart Lane in three weeks’ time.

We think we can win the title this season.

Mikel Arteta

“The club is very ambitious for this year,” said Arteta. “Everyone in the club is happy, nobody wants to leave. We saw a few players released with the intention of bringing some new players in and I think that’s what we are trying to do to give us a better chance of winning the title.

“There is no clear favourite for the title this year. You never know, someone could respond from the start and boom, away they go.

“We think we can win the title this season. If we don’t believe that, we won’t do it. It is going to be the most difficult Premier League by far because we are talking about four or five teams who could win it.

“I think we have got the ability to do it but we have to find the consistency through the year to earn the chance to get to April in contention and give it a go.”

Arsenal start their campaign with a home game against Aston Villa on Saturday which they are 2/5 to win. They are available at 6/5 to keep a clean sheet against Paul Lambert’s side.

The 31-year-old Saints star, who scored 15 Premier League goals last term, has never been included in a senior England squad before.

He has found the net 93 times in 170 league appearances for Southampton, helping the club climb from League One to the Premier League.

He plied his trade in the lower leagues with Macclesfield Town, Stockport County, Rochdale and Bristol Rovers before sealing a £1million switch to St Mary’s four years ago.

Jermain Defoe, Wayne Rooney and Danny Welbeck are the other three strikers named in the 25-man squad while Manchester United’s recent signing from Crystal Palace, Wilfried Zaha, who featured for the Under-21s at Euro 2013 this summer, is also included.

Zaha made his senior debut nine months ago in the friendly defeat to Sweden.

Steven Gerrard and Jack Wilshere return to the squad after missing the friendlies against Republic of Ireland and Brazil because of injury.

The visit of Scotland to Wembley will be the first time the two sides have met since 1999 when England won a two-legged play-off for Euro 2000.

In the 110 matches between the two sides, England have won 45, Scotland 41 and there have been 24 draws.

Pepe Reina regrets manner of exit

Pepe Reina regrets manner of exit

Pepe Reina has revealed that he is unhappy with Liverpool’s decision to allow him to join Napoli on loan this season.

The 30-year-old Spanish goalkeeper has been a first-team regular at Anfield since joining the Reds from Villarreal for £6million eight years ago, starting 285 Premier League matches for the club.

If I have one regret, it is the way that I am leaving.

Pepe Reina

However, Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers opted to let Reina leave after completing the signing of Sunderland’s Belgian shot-stopper Simon Mignolet earlier in the summer.

Reina had been linked with a move to Barcelona last season but insists he told Liverpool that he would be interested in extending his contract at Anfield if an offer from last term’s La Liga winners did not materialise.

A clearly upset Reina has issued a statement on his official website which read: “If I have one regret, it is the way that I am leaving. It is only natural that I would be disappointed that the Liverpool management agreed to loan me to Napoli without telling me first.

“I thought that I deserved better than that even though I understand that difficult decisions have to be taken in football.

“A lot has been made about me informing the club that if an offer came in from Barcelona that I would have liked them to consider it. But I had also spoken to the club about the possibility of extending my contract if the offer was not made.

“I would have liked to have been able to say goodbye in a different way but because of the way the move came about this was not possible.”

Liverpool can be backed at 33/1 to win the 2013-14 Premier League title outright and are 2/1 to finish in the top four, while Napoli are available at 6/1 to clinch the Serie A title outright this season.

England v Republic of Ireland – Hodgson ready for ‘crucial’ matches

Steven Gerrard will miss this week’s England’s friendlies against the Republic of Ireland and Brazil because of a shoulder injury.

England v Republic of Ireland - Hodgson ready for 'crucial' matches

Roy Hodgson insists this week’s friendlies against the Republic of Ireland and Brazil are important for England’s hopes of qualifying for next year’s World Cup finals.

The Republic visit Wembley for the first time in over two decades when they play Hodgson’s side on Wednesday before England fly to Rio de Janeiro for this weekend’s friendly against Brazil.

It is important for me to use this opportunity to look at players once more as we prepare for our final four qualifying matches.

Roy Hodgson

England will be without several players due to injury for the two matches as Steven Gerrard (shoulder), Andy Carroll (heel), Jack Wilshere (ankle), Tom Cleverley (calf) and Kyle Walker all miss out.

England only have one more friendly – against Scotland in August – before they resume their World Cup qualification campaign in September.

Hodgson said: “It is important for me to use this opportunity to look at players once more as we prepare for our final four qualifying matches. These are crucial preparation matches for the qualification games.”

Meanwhile, Republic of Ireland boss Giovanni Trapattoni will be without the services of striker Kevin Doyle (Achilles tendon), winger Anthony Pilkington (knee) and midfielder Paul Green (hamstring) for Wednesday’s match. Defender Marc Wilson is also a doubt with a calf injury.

Veteran Italian boss Trapattoni said: “We can show them we are the same – that’s very important. That’s a stimulation for me, it’s very important that they show they are every bit as good.

“England are missing Steven Gerrard, Andy Carroll is also out, but they have a strong team. They have others – Jermain Defoe, Wayne Rooney, Daniel Sturridge, Danny Welbeck – it’s OK, Hodgson has enough offensive players.

“But I have confidence because our team in the last game gave me much trust.”

England are 11/2 to beat the Republic 2-0 with Frank Lampard 6/1 to open the scoring.

Ashley Cole will captain the England team against the Republic of Ireland.

FA Cup – United handed semi-final derby incentive

Manchester United will face rivals Manchester City in the semi-finals of the FA Cup if they can beat Chelsea in a sixth-round replay.

FA Cup - United handed semi-final derby incentive

Sir Alex Ferguson’s team, 3/1 to win the FA Cup, face a tricky trip to Stamford Bridge after throwing away a two-goal lead against Chelsea.

Indeed Chelsea, 2-0 down after only 11 minutes, almost won the match in the closing stages after goals by Eden Hazard and Ramires had brought them level.

Manchester City, 11/8 to win the FA Cup, had a far easier quarter-final encounter, thrashing Barnsley 5-0 on Saturday.

The draw means that a ‘smaller’ team will be definitely be in the FA Cup final in May after Wigan Athletic were paired with Millwall or Blackburn Rovers.

The Latics, 8/11 to be relegated this season, secured a shock 3-0 win at Everton on Saturday, while Championship duo Millwall and Blackburn played out a goalless draw on Sunday and face a replay at Ewood Park later this month.

FA Cup semi-final draw:
Millwall or Blackburn Rovers v Wigan Athletic
Manchester United or Chelsea v Manchester City

Ties to be played weekend of 13/14 April.

Evra urges Hazard to join United

Evra urges Hazard to join United

Patrice Evra has urged Belgian wonderkid Eden Hazard to join Manchester United if he wants to win titles.

United, 9/4 to win next season’s Premier League title, are involved in a three-way scrap, which also includes Manchester City (5/4) and Champions League winners Chelsea (9/2), who all covet the skills of the £30million-rated Lille attacking midfielder.

Hazard has done little to quell the expectation and has kept everyone guessing at to what decision he will finally arrive at.

If he comes to Manchester, I assure him that he wins titles.

Patrice Evra

Sources have indicated City chiefs have snubbed his agent’s efforts to be dragged into an auction and pay him his reported £200,000-a-week wage demands.

Hazard was a visitor to the Etihad Stadium last month to watch the Blues put one over United in the Manchester derby, and was also shown houses in the Cheshire area by the club.

The Belgian international, who will line up against England at Wembley next week, has promised to make an announcement by 4th June, before he goes away on a family holiday.

But according to Old Trafford defender, Evra, the 21-year-old has only one decision to make. The French left-back insists: “I’m not his father but, if he comes to Manchester, I assure him that he wins titles. That’s if he joins my Manchester, not the blue side.”
