Wayne Rooney upbeat for England future

Wayne Rooney is confident that both he and England can improve in the future under Roy Hodgson, with the 2014 World Cup the most immediate target.

The 26-year-old Manchester United striker has scored 29 goals in 76 appearances for his country, but still believes that he can do better and thinks that Hodgson is the right man to help him improve.

Rooney told reporters: “It’s still a great honour to play for my country and I know I haven’t played at my best, but, being honest, as a team we can do better.

“I am not going to win a tournament on my own. We need the whole team to perform, but I can see we are heading in the right direction.

“I feel we are working well with a lot of younger players in the squad and there is a different feel and way of playing when we are on the training pitch. It is a case of us moving forward.”

England and Rooney are in action on Friday evening when they play host to San Marino at Wembley, with the hosts 11/2 to win the World Cup qualifier 6-0, while Rooney is 4/9 to score two goals or more.

They face a much stiffer test on Tuesday when they travel to Warsaw to take on Poland, with the Three Lions currently 20/1 to lift the World Cup in two years’ time in Brazil.
