World Cup 2014 – Coleman coy on Bale

Wales boss Chris Coleman has insisted he is not sure whether Gareth Bale will be fit for their World Cup qualifier with Croatia on Tuesday.

The Tottenham Hotspur star was substituted at half-time during Wales’ 2-1 victory over Scotland at Hampden Park on Friday night, having picked up a knock to his ankle.

Bale has also been struggling with illness and is now a doubt for the clash with Croatia at the Millennium Stadium.

Coleman has not shined any further light on Bale’s fitness but has revealed his unwillingness to play the Spurs superstar if he is not ready.

He said: “I don’t know if he will be okay. I’m not sitting on the fence, but the next 24 hours will be crucial.

“All we can do is wrap him up in cotton wool. If he is not ready, then we can’t risk him.

“We won’t because we have to be fair to Tottenham. They never stand in his way and he always comes along. Gareth likes to come, but we have to look after him.”

Wales are 9/2 to win, 13/5 to draw and 4/6 to lose to Croatia on Tuesday night.
